Mr Reagan and three others were injured in the shooting outside a hotel in Washington in March 1981. Mr Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity but was sent for treatment to a Washington hospital. He has already been spending 17 days a month at his mother's home in Virginia under strict conditions. A judge ruled that Mr Hinckley, now 61, could reside full-time there on "convalescent leave" from 5 August. Restrictions, including a ban on talking to the media, will remain in place.
Sources: BBC NEWS CBS News The Telegraph UK
I may not agree with Regan's policies, but I do admire his reaction to the attempt.

Between that and convincing Russia we had a Death Star laser or whatever, lol.
i wonder what Jodie thinks about this?
"Restrictions, including a ban on talking to the media, will remain in place." Why is he being banned from talking to the media? I know he was an extremist and might still be, but he's served his time and he can't exactly do anything against Reagan now, can he? He also clearly suffered from mental illness - surely he could be used an example of reform and how violence is not the way to get what you want? I must admit, I would be curious to hear what someone like him would make of today's politics... But of course, curiosity often kills the cat.
I hope he doesn't try to kill Reagan again

Especially since Lee Harvey Oswald was shot by Jack Ruby, they wanted to make sure nobody would try to take out Hinckley so they could question him later

AMA when

I just want to point out this guy didn't do 35 years in prison, he was in a comfy mental facility. His family was/is wealthy and politically connected. He was never going to rot in prison like you or I would if we did something like that. Every day in this country we lock people in prison, people who have even worse mental illness than him. Yet they don't have the money or connections so they go to prison for lesser crimes.

I must admit, I would be curious to hear what someone like him would make of today's politics... But of course, curiosity often kills the cat.
NPR had an extensive segment on this, from what they described he's essentially on house arrest. He has an extremely rigid itinerary each and every single day for everywhere he goes, from somewhere to eat to going to the movies to anything outside of his house. They noted that he is not cured of mental illness, merely shown signs of being non-violent. His doctors also have said that he now understands his actions and is extremely sorrowful over them. The FBI have surveillance on him 24/7. He's also had the freedom to go out and about in the world for quite a few years now, it's only that now his residence will be his mother's house instead of the mental hospital. He has several hobbies, including recording music and photography. Out of the past 5 or so years he's already been out in the world, he's only ever deviated from the FBI controlled itinerary twice. Once he was suppose to go out to eat and instead he went to a record studio for a bit to see if how much it would cost to record. The other time (which is rather interesting) is that he skipped going to the movies to instead visit the Barnes & Nobles. While there, he went to a section on Ronald Reagan and stared at the books - he didn't touch them or read them, he merely stood at the shelf and stared at them for a while then went home.
I kind of want to hear his music
Out of a specially made briefcase for it!
That's pretty badass like something you would think would only exist in Hollywood movies Also isn't banning him from speaking to the media a clear violation of his constitutional rights?
That's pretty badass like something you would think would only exist in Hollywood movies Also isn't banning him from speaking to the media a clear violation of his constitutional rights?
It's probably more due to his mental illness flaring rather than punishing him by restricting rights. The radio segment I listened to said that he has a narcissistic disorder, so public attention like that would probably severely hurt him and regress.
Was he treated for the alleged stalking he did to Jodie Foster?
Just in time for us to announce we're building a nuclear power station in Britain in his honour
I wonder if he knows Jodie Foster is a lesbian.
I kind of want to hear his music
Devo did a song with his lyrics.
It makes me sad to see that some people think he should've been executed/imprisoned.
Devo did a song with his lyrics.
Oh shit. The fact that Devo did it makes it even better.
