Google’s Chrome browser might soon be getting an easy way to tell you which open tabs are making noise, or recording it. The new feature is part of the latest Chromium build, and features a throbbing EQ animation over the noisy tab’s favicon (video [del]below[/del] above) to tell you and your system that it’s doing audio stuff. Chromium is the open source project that feeds into Google’s Chrome browser, and is often the first place that its new features show up
Handy!
Wow, I've been needing something like this for a very long time. Not being able to find the source of noise can be very frustrating some times.

Holy shit
they actually made this
and it's only been like 5 days
get working on the other ones, Google
Is there an addon for Firefox like this? I'd like it...
Nothing like middle clicking a link only to shit your pants when an ad with sound comes on
Google: Solving the heavy-internet users' problems.
This would have been useful for the "prepar... 2 get spooked" thing in the Refugee Camp.
Where was this when Facepunch was spamming me with Vimeo links?

I swear I've seen one before, but I cannot for the life of me find it right now.
this will be a lifesaver on shitty forums that allow autoplay videos
I use to hate that when I was browsing porn in like 20 tabs. Ahh the days of DSL where videos took forever to buffer.
i think itd be better as well to have the tab glowing as well to catch the attention of the user quicker, i mean favicon works but i dont really look at my favicon unless theres something happening (such as facebooks (1) or some websites have it scrolling)

Sounds hilarious, do explain

I hope you're a fan of loud screaming and sonic music turned way past up.

This'll be handy when looking at porn. Sometimes I try and mask the noise by a YouTube video during the day rather than suspiciously muting all sounds and when I think I muted the video all of a sudden an ad starts playing and I can't figure out where its coming from.
Never again will anne.jpg spook my guts off.
For years now I've kept my browser muted at all times unless I actually need sound, eg watching a video. It's about time something like this got made.
Something important to note
The feature doesn't work on the latest OS X build of Chromium, but we tried it out for ourselves on the Windows version, and while it works with standard audio files and HTML5 video, it won't respond to video in Adobe's Flash Player.
But the standard Noscript/Adblock combo already blocks the majority of those ads.
Are there seriously still people who don't use those? In 2013?

It works for Flash for me.

idk what the verge is doing wrong then, is it just mac that isnt working or is it also linux?
adblock + flashblock + popup blocker = all i need
Would be nice if there was also an option to automatically mute any tabs not being actively viewed, while still indicating it's trying to make noise.
I have click to play for browser plugins enabled, and adblock installed, so this isn't an issue for me
Good for those who have click to play disabled (aka everyone else :v:)

That thread only plays sound on inferior browsers.
I run NoScript so things in pages never play sound unless I explicitly tell them to.

How do you think all these websites are still alive and kicking?
This is in the latest dev channel build of chrome now
I wish it worked like an actual visualizer, shame it's just an animated overlay.

If you're using a modern, up to date browser, and using common sense, you will never need noscript.
