The queen made the announcement in pre-recorded address broadcast on Dutch television. The queen, who is approaching her 75th birthday, said she had been thinking about this moment for several years.
-- Original OP --
Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands is to make a televised announcement, amid speculation in local media that she will abdicate the throne. The queen, who is approaching her 75th birthday, would address the nation at 19:00 local time (18:00 GMT), the royal household said in a statement.
I am Dutch and I am proud to say I do not care.
okay
This thread is going to become filled with liberal bigots and a 3 page argument on whether the monarchy should be hanged by their ankles and forced to abdicate.
As an American, there are only two Queens that I know of: the Queen of England and Freddie Mercury. On topic, I think monarchs should give up their throne when they get too old.
This thread is going to become filled with liberal bigots and a 3 page argument on whether the monarchy should be hanged by their ankles and forced to abdicate.
Sorry, why are people who don't want a monarchy 'bigots'?
Why would she abdicate?
Why would she abdicate?
She's old.
She's old.
so is lizzy
so is lizzy
Elizabeth II should abdicate...
Give it up to William and Kate she should
so is lizzy
There was hype in the States about Elizabeth retiring after her ceremony last year. You know... the one with all the boats in the Thames? That thing, can't remember the name. Yeah, some people thought she was gonna quit there and then.
Why would she abdicate?
She's useless
you mean floaty boaty nancy wancy day god that's like an annual holiday over here christ i'm surprised she hasn't kicked the bucket yet
She's trying to best Victoria's record.
Sorry, why are people who don't want a monarchy 'bigots'?
Because often they're too arrogant and far up their own arses to view the monarchy from anything other than a distorted liberal perspective born out of jealousy.
Wellp, she's gone. I still do not care.
I don't mind this monarchy, it's not like it has much of an impact on the choices made here.
I'm Dutch, and the queen/king has absolutely NO power here. And she indeed kicked the bucket, and I don't care at all.
good job creating an argument out of thin air so that when the discussion does eventually arrive (if it ever does) you can look down your nose at people who don't like monarchies
What do you mean when the discussion arrives? Us monarch lovers will always look down on you, I'm doing it right now in fact.

Look down my nose at monarchy haters? haven't I already established I'm not going to agree with them anyway? Are you seriously associating the posh stigma society gives to royalty with me as though is obviously reflected in my attitude just because I defend it? I'll listen to any anti-monarchy argument and its points if I'm having a debate, only as my post stated I expect people to be bigoted.
I support the monarchy and I'm a liberal and this makes no sense to me.
You get Liberals who think the Monarchy don't have any right to appreciate the luxuries of being part of a wealthy family and instead they should break their backs working to earn a living like a stereotypical working class citizen, its just jealousy, those same people who believe this shit would be choosing to live work-less lives of luxury any day of the week if they were born into it. I don't really mind the monarchy; Beatrix did a good job as Head of state, and I hope Alexander will live up to this.
I don't really mind the monarchy; Beatrix did a good job as Head of state, and I hope Alexander will live up to this.
We all know the puffy-face won't be able to live up to his mother. [editline]28th January 2013[/editline]
so is lizzy
UK royalty has a tradition of dying on the throne, the Dutch has not.
