• Peter Jackson Filming The Hobbit Entirely In 3D!

When original director Guillermo Del Toro was still attached to direct the two Lord Of The Rings prequels The Hobbit, it was said that both films would be 2D only. Then Del Toro's departure plus several other problems led to The Lord Of The Rings director Peter Jackson taking over directing duties for the films. Now it appears that Jackson, who is a long time supporter of the RED Camera, will use the EPIC camera(the predecessor to the RED model) to film the two Hobbit movies entirely in 3D. The Hobbit will be one of the first to use the EPIC, Which they have ordered thirty of. Jackson has used the RED camera on projects such as his short film Crossing the Line. Here is what Jackson had to say about the Cameras:
"I have always liked the look of Red footage. I'm not a scientist or mathematician, but the image Red produces has a much more filmic feel than most of the other digital formats. I find the picture quality appealing and attractive, and with the Epic, Jim and his team have gone even further. It is a fantastic tool, the Epic not only has cutting edge technology, incredible resolution and visual quality, but it is also a very practical tool for film makers. Many competing digital systems require the cameras to be tethered to large cumbersome VTR machines. The Epic gives us back the ability to be totally cable free, even when working in stereo."
Jim Jannard the owner and founder of RED also had this to say about Jackson's choice to use their camera:
"Everybody at RED is incredibly proud that Peter has chosen the Epic. The Hobbit is a major production, and could have chosen any camera system that they wanted. The fact that they went with us is extremely gratifying."
The Hobbit is expected to start filming back to back some time next year with a 2012 release expected for part one and 2013 release for part two. The Hobbit movies will be directed by Peter Jackson. The Hobbit will star Andy Serkis, Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Rob Kazinsky, Aidan Turner, Graham McTavish, John Callen, Stephen Hunter, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, James Nesbitt, and Adam Brown
Yay 3D! Like all the other movies, BUT BETTER.
seems like the camera's have benefits other than just 3D cool
3D hurts my eyes and makes the picture blurry most of the time. Not sure if I really want this, it's mostly a gimmick to get more money.
martin freeman, nice arthur dent (in the hitchhiker's guide) and bilbo baggins (in the hobbit) are a lot alike in a lot of ways
Damn. And I was planning to see this movie, too.
I'm pretty sure there will still be 2D screenings of the movie - hell, even fucking Avatar had 2D screenings, so don't get your panties in a bunch.
At least it's being filmed in 3D, unlike a lot of movies that are just given shitty pseudo-3D through special effects.
As long as it is being filmed in 3d and not the crappy computer faked version, then I'm ok with this.
God I really don't see the appeal of 3D, I really prefer 2D films. And yes I have seen avatar in 3d, I still preferred the 2d version.
I'll preemptively say this movie is gonna blow
3D hurts my eyes and makes the picture blurry most of the time. It's not all gimmicky shit with stuff flying at you, that's for kids movies. Nowadays when movies use 3D it's only to improve depth perception, I don't see why all of you hate it so much.
A potentially great movie ruined by 3D gimmicky shit.
I trust Peter Jackson to pull an Avatar and not make it gimmicky shit. Could be good but I'm dubious.
A potentially great movie ruined by 3D gimmicky shit.
this is like judging a game by it's graphics.
this thread proves most of facepunch doesn't get out much you can still see movies in 2D, calm the fuck down
3D IS A GIMMICK THE FILM INDUSTRY IS DEAD I like films when they're actually shot in 3d
and I no longer give a damn about this film.
The old way to do 3D was awesome, new version will fuck up your eyes if you try to focus on the actual 3d part.
3D IS A GIMMICK THE FILM INDUSTRY IS DEAD I like films when they're actually shot in 3d
Uh...lol?
To people who won't watch it just because it has a 3d version: Your loss. Go do something else while I enjoy an amazing movie.
there is a reason 3D died in the '80's
there is a reason 3D died in the '80's
Yeah there is, because 80 was shit.
Well, um... Great.[/sarcasm] Please don't screw this up Peter.
God I really don't see the appeal of 3D, I really prefer 2D films. And yes I have seen avatar in 3d, I still preferred the 2d version.
word. It seems they just add a ton of gimmicks in 3D movies and it ends up being an amusement park ride more than a film telling a compelling story.
avatar in 3d was fucking beautiful this better be like that except with less pocahontas(cant be assed so to spell right)
okay people this is going to be painful for some of you to hear but it's the truth ready for it? here it is 3D film making is the way of the future there are no two ways about it - it is only going to become more popular get used to it you whiny god damn morons (this is coming from someone who has never seen a 3D film so I have no opinion)

That look on his face is a pure smug evil
Why do you people think that 3d = instant cheap tricks? Making it 2d doesn't magically remove any cheap tricks. The only difference between 3d and 2d is that 3d is shot with 2 cameras, that's all. What tricks are you talking about?
