• Fiat accused over emissions cheating software
Fiat Chrysler has been accused of not telling authorities about software that regulates emissions in thousands of its diesel vehicles. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said the company broke the law by installing, but failing to disclose, the technology in more than 100,000 Jeeps and Dodge vehicles. The agency said the software caused higher nitrogen oxide levels. Fiat Chrysler boss Sergio Marchionne said the firm had done nothing illegal. "There was never any intent of creating conditions that were designed to defeat the testing process. This is absolute nonsense," he added. Shares in Fiat Chrysler were trading 12% lower in New York and closed 16% lower in Milan. The EPA said Fiat Chrysler could be liable for fines of about $44,500 per vehicle, which would mean a total of about $4.6bn (£3.8bn).
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-38600012
Oh boy, this again.
Chrysler's are absolute shit anyway. My buddy had one as a rental car after an accident totaled his. Fucking 2015 Chrysler something or another, 4-cylinder sedan, 15 MPG. 15. Shit-house cars from a shit-house company.
Somebody's share prices are about to fall.

honestly it wouldn't surprise me if just about every car company is cheating emissions tests. vw and fiat are just the ones getting caught
honestly it wouldn't surprise me if just about every car company is cheating emissions tests. vw and fiat are just the ones getting caught
This. Everyone's going to be at it

Pity it just goes into the government coffers to be wasted on petty things. Would be nice if they used these kinds of fines directly for ecologically safe energy / electric cars / renewable energy. Fuck, just give it all to Tesla.
Well rumors were everyone's doing it [editline]12th January 2017[/editline]
That's crazy... just take a minute to realise just how much money that is in a fine and how many lives that much money could support... Makes you wonder what's the genuine diesel brand out there.
Fuck I work at a FCA dealership. Dont know what this will do to us.
honestly it wouldn't surprise me if just about every car company is cheating emissions tests. vw and fiat are just the ones getting caught
Others have also been caught. [editline]12th January 2017[/editline]
Makes you wonder what's the genuine diesel brand out there.
Diesel is a bad passenger car fuel, it can't be helped in a world of tighter and tighter emissions [editline]12th January 2017[/editline]
This. Everyone's going to be at it
My friend likened it to banking at London, most of them do shady stuff, one gets caught and faces the full brunt of the public then others slowly trickle behind but the public reputation lost is usually not as bad. The first get hit the hardest
This. Everyone's going to be at it
Even tesla :v: On a more serious note, part of me wonders if it comes back to trying to get every little bit of performance they can for their car. Claiming your car is better for the environment has become a real selling feature.
Diesel is a bad passenger car fuel, it can't be helped in a world of tighter and tighter emissions
It's plenty fine if you need ludicrous engine durability and MPG out the wazoo. It's an odd tradeoff: Save the environment because you spend less fuel to go further but you end up killing it because the fuel you do spend is worse for the environment.
Diesel cars should not exist, you they are incredibly bad for human health.
Fix it again, Tony

Thing can pull but it weighs so much (even though its convertible) that its classified as a fucking van. The upside is that mean you can have 100% tint on back windows.

You lose a lot of stiffness by removing the roof, and end up needing much more metal lower down to compensate. [Editline]blah[/editline] That's mental tho
Weren't almost all global car manufacturers implicated in this scandal at some point? I seem to recall VW being just the tip of the iceberg, and they later found at least 10 other manufacturers had been doing it.

So what's the point? Manufacturers clearly can't handle diesel emissions very well.
That's fucking pathetic. My 1987 V8 pony car gets 18 mpg. Aren't there legal minimums companies have to meet?
Dunno about American regulations, but here in Australia (where we've harmonised our regulations with the EU) cars are only required to have their emissions of NOx and particulate matter not exceed maximum limits. Cars can consume as much fuel and spew out as much carbon dioxide as they please, as long as the actually harmful shit is kept under control. That's the thing with Diesels. Yes, they use less fuel and produce less carbon dioxide, but god damn are they absolutely terrible with NOx and particulate matter emissions. Especially when makers such as VW decide to program their Diesels to cheat the already-generous emissions tests for Diesels (compared to Petrol engines).
