[release] A Virginia Wesleyan College student is facing two counts of possessing counterfeit money following an investigation of an Xbox he purchased and tried to return, court records show. Christopher Moore, 21, of Petersburg and locally of the 1500 block of Wesleyan Drive, Norfolk, paid cash for an Xbox 360 at GameStop, 700 N. Military Hwy., on Dec. 15, according to a search warrant affidavit. A manager was suspicious of the $100 bills he used and turned them over to police, who in turn gave them to the U.S. Secret Service, which found them to be counterfeit and made by a printing press and plates, the affidavit said. Moore tried to return the Xbox the next day, according to the affidavit, but a manager called police, who arrested him and seized additional $100 bills that authorities said were counterfeit. He is to appear in Norfolk General District Court on Jan. 24.[/release] http://hamptonroads.com/2011/12/wesleyan-student-arrested-counterfeitmoney-charges BRB, going to try Monopoly money

I am not surprised they got through. You're dumb if you think they were obviously fake bills that the store just took out of hand.
Vidya games are serious business
totally ignoring the fact some counterfeits were printed with a press and the proper plates
Vidya games are serious business
No, counterfeiting is.
Vidya games are serious business
I'm pretty sure the secret service was called because of counterfeit money, not "vidya games"
Vidya games are serious business
~Holy shit quad ninja i'm just going to snip as this thread is now skipping like a broken record~
This is really bad but cool at the same time. The fact that he got away using goat bills to buy his Xbox shows skill. He is either really smart or really stupid.
Vidya games are serious business

The U.S. Secret Service has two distinct areas of responsibility: -Treasury roles, covering missions such as prevention and investigation of counterfeiting of U.S. currency and U.S treasury securities, and investigation of major fraud.[4] -Protective roles, ensuring the safety of current and former national leaders and their families, such as the President, past Presidents, Vice Presidents, presidential candidates, foreign embassies (per an agreement with the U.S. State Department's Bureau of Diplomatic Security (DS) Office of Foreign Missions (OFM)), etc.[5]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Secret_Service That was their job, so no matter what product was being bought, they'd still do an investigation.
He is either really smart or really stupid.
he went to return the xbox after using fake money to buy it. i think it's pretty obvious he's not smart in any way.
this is now a thread wherein we shit on wilford brimley [editline]1[/editline] apparently
he went to return the xbox after using fake money to buy it. i think it's pretty obvious he's not smart in any way.
It's called money laundering.
It's called money laundering.
at the same store though?
This is how he did it:
If he were smart he would of payed in a random of assortment of large and small bills, like one $100 bill a few 20's, 10s, 1s, etc
That was pretty fucking stupid. Protip: If you fucking money launder do it on a friday after banks close, use individuals versus retail stores, and get the fuck out of town before monday morning because as soon as the bills hit the bank feds will be in that town like flies on shit.
Good. Our economy can't handle fake money at the moment. Makes me wonder, though, if he'd have gotten away with getting a free xBox if he hadn't tried to return it...
at the same store though?
Most stores require a receipt to accept a return, thus, he couldn't return it at any other store. his only other option would have been to eBay it.
This is how he did it:
If you can pull that off, it's pretty ingenious. It's not real counterfeiting, and unless a camera watches you, there's zero evidence that you did anything wrong. If the people accept the "money", it's not a robbery, maybe a scam at worst. In most cases you fail they won't call the police at all, either.
at the same store though?
Admittedly that was a rather silly mistake.
Some franchise stores allow you to return a product to any one of their stores, not just the one you bought the item at.
His transaction could have also been flagged, so upon returning it he'd have been caught then and there. A sensible person should have sold it at a flea market.

Overall, Laundering fake money is easy as long as you do it in different towns at different times, Always combined with real green, And never use more than two bills at the same store twice.
Overall, Laundering fake money is easy as long as you do it in different towns at different times, Always combined with real green, And never use more than two bills at the same store twice.
How do you people know this stuff?
Vidya games are serious business
Not really, but counterfeit money is.
How do you people know this stuff?
Experience. Want to know how to get money out of an ATM using baking paper?
Counterfeit currency is a serious threat
Except when banks do it.
This is something that causes true loss of profits, not piracy.
Why is it always $100 bills?
