• Elmo found dead. Children everywhere cry.
Kevin Clash, the longtime voice and puppeteer behind Sesame Street’s Elmo character, has resigned in the aftermath of allegations — which Sesame Workshop had previously said were unfounded — that he had an underage sexual relationship. In a statement released Tuesday, Sesame Workshop said:
Sesame Workshop’s mission is to harness the educational power of media to help all children the world over reach their highest potential. Kevin Clash has helped us achieve that mission for 28 years, and none of us, especially Kevin, want anything to divert our attention from our focus on serving as a leading educational organization. Unfortunately, the controversy surrounding Kevin’s personal life has become a distraction that none of us want, and he has concluded that he can no longer be effective in his job and has resigned from Sesame Street. This is a sad day for Sesame Street.
Mr. Clash has played Elmo on “Sesame Street” for decades. He was profiled in a documentary last year, “Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey.” The sexual accusations were made public last Monday, then later recanted by a 24-year-old man who has remained anonymous. The episode led to Mr. Clash coming out as a gay man, something he had not previously discussed in public. “I have never been ashamed of this or tried to hide it, but felt it was a personal and private matter,” he said in the statement last week. Production of “Sesame Street” was unaffected by Mr. Clash’s leave of absence and presumably will not be affected by his resignation, either. Mr. Clash had been helping to identify other puppeteers who could play Elmo for some time, and they filled in for him while he was away from work, a Sesame Workshop executive said last week.
http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/11/20/kevin-clash-elmo-puppeteer-resigns/?smid=tw-share WELP!
poor guy
With the title I thought he'd actually died.
Shame and stupid he had to leave like this.
What's going on with all these people allegedly being paedophiles.
With the title I thought he'd actually died.
I don't see how they can keep using elmo anymore to be honest. Yea they got some extra stuff they are holding onto but that whole huge marketing bit for the show is now a sinking ship and it might bring the show down with it.
What a shame. I saw his documentary, it was a really inspiring story.
What's going on with all these people allegedly being paedophiles.
it's pretty much a witch hunt this day and age
it's pretty much a witch hunt this day and age
"Wont somebody PLEASE think of the children!"
"Wont somebody PLEASE think of the children!"
I'm leaving that to the hysterical soccermoms and ACTUAL paedophiles.
This is why we need to change the way we think about cases such as these. The fact that a simple baseless accusation can ruin a man's life like this sickens me.

He could have just let it play out in the courts if it truly was a baseless accusation. It's obvious that had it gone through the courts, Kevin would have been convicted, so he paid six fucking figures to keep that from happening. There is also now a second accuser, for those of you who still doubt.
Well tickle me suprised...that sucks.
As someone who has been on the young end of relationships like this, I love it when this stuff happens and these people get exposed. Trust me, they're awful predatory people who absolutely deserve to be exposed as predators. Even if the relationship really did happen when the kid was 18, which there's no reason to believe that but let's just say it's true, it still means that Kevin pursued an underage individual for a relationship and simply gave it time to become technically legal, with complete awareness that his object of desire was underage at the time. That's absolutely predatory by definition. It's basically like saying "hey yeah I like underage boys, but I also like legal loopholes". Also it's not necessarily that I object to a relationship like this between two consenting individuals, it's more that I object to the terrible fucked up part of Kevin's brain that makes him actively seek out this kind of thing. As an exploiter of the sickness, I can be the first one to say that it absolutely is a sickness.
it's pretty much a witch hunt this day and age
Indeed

It's people like those that make things worse for legitimate victims.
If in fact the kid was underage... then that's no good. I really don't have tolerance for such an age gap. A grown up man like that should know better. How old was the kid allegedly?
Remember Michael Jackson? Accusations were recanted, and yet people still remember him as a pedophile. All this has happened before. All this will happen again.
These days it seems there's more people that get off on accusing others of being pedos than there are actual pedos.
Remember Michael Jackson? Accusations were recanted, and yet people still remember him as a pedophile. All this has happened before. All this will happen again.
The thing was, Michael Jackson was acquitted of all charges in a court of law. Public perception has nothing to do with the fact that he was still found to be innocent of all charges. Kevin settled this for six figures out of court, that's why his reputation is destroyed. If he was truly innocent, it would have come out in the courts, but he didn't let it get that far. The public perception of him is of someone who didn't want to risk losing a case and threw money at it until it went away. I want to say again that I have personal experience with this type of relationship and, based on what I know about how this stuff really goes down, I'm absolutely discouraged by the fact that people seem to really want to believe in Kevin's innocence.

I'm sorry, but you're not by any means an objective voice on whether or not this man is guilty. Your bitterness due to past experiences holds no bearing on this case.
I think that it is time that we make legislation that if someone makes false accusations that there are to be the ones to get into trouble. It is kinda sad that someone can make an accusation and get away with it if there are lying.
So he's guilty because he's afraid that the juries will convict based on accusation and testimony alone, as they have done in the past? They didn't convict michael and they had a whole lineup of kids who all could specifically identify michael jackson's penis out of a lineup. Like I said, public perception has nothing at all to do with what happens in a court of law. Kevin had a great shot at winning this case had he just let it go through, and everyone would have known beyond a shadow of a doubt that he was truly innocent, but the facts are he didn't, and so now we don't know if he really was innocent, we just know that he was accused and threw money at it until it went away, which doesn't look very good for Kevin. On top of that, the first accuser is trying to find a way to return the check and see this actually go to court, which means that Kevin's plan of throwing money at it isn't actually going to work, which means any future accusers aren't out for money, they're out for a conviction.
Whatever happened to 'innocent until proven otherwise'? People always defend this but whenever someone is accused of child molestation they are automatically considered guilty by almost everyone. It's extremely unfair in some cases. Not defending anyone here since we know next to nothing about what actually happened, but I feel this is something that happens way too often.

While one may want a conviction, others may be out for their own personal gain. There is always that possibility. In any case, I refuse to assume guilt. Let's see where this all goes.

That's what takes this one over the edge. Like you say, you are innocent until proven guilty. Unless you pay enough money to just make it go away and nobody ever finds out for sure either way, now you just look like a smart criminal. That's what looks so incriminating here. That, plus the receiver of the hush money doesn't want to take the bribe.
I've seen far too many cases of false accusations destroying respectable men to believe that these kinds of cases are always cut and dry.
