So I just got a guitar for my birthday, and I was wondering if you guys have any tips on learning to play it. Are there any chords/tabs/songs I should start with? [editline]10:36PM[/editline] Also, it's electro-acoustic, if that makes a difference
E Em C G G7 D D7 These are easy chords that turn up a bit.
Lessons. That is all.
Start by learning chords like G D A Em C, you can really play a lot of songs with just those chords.
Learn chords and scales. If I'm not mistaken, those are the first things you should learn, besides the basics, like how to hold a pick and things of that sort. [editline]05:19PM[/editline] http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/lessons/
Take lessons if you aren't any good at self learning. Just try to have fun, learn some easy sounding songs you like.

"Don't run before you can walk" Best bit of advice I can possibly give you.

Thanks for the link Ubergoose! I'm learning those chords lazyguy, thanks.
awesome, I was ten minutes away from making this thread myself
the hardest thing about learning guitar is prolly being persistant and keep practicing. learning your basic chords Really helps, and for begginners is really fun. mainly because you can play many songs with basic E, C, G, D, A, chords. most songs are just 3 chords if they are basic. you just need to know that when you start out its hard and you wont be Jimmy Page right away. but its really fun and you can always improve (: keep rockin. Easy Songs. Blowing in the Wind - Bob Dylan A Perfect Sonnet - Bright Eyes Shine a light - Wolf Parade <--- Tab song not Chords Lazy Eye <--- Tab song not Chords
the easiest song to learn is Smoke On The Water, very easy...I've been playing guitar for 2 years and at first I found it very hard but it gets easier. Tabs are an easier way to read music. Tab: e----------------------------------------------------------- B----------------------------------------------------------- G----------------------------------------------------------- This is a basic tab layout D----------------------------------------------------------- A----------------------------------------------------------- E----------------------------------------------------------- (E is the top string of the guitar and e is the lowest (furthest away from you) If you know what the strings are then this will be very easy for you. Ok, frets are the gaps in between the metal parts of the guitars "neck" The first gap will be called fret 1 and the second gap fret 2 and so on. 0 on the tab is known as an open. This means that you just pluck the string without holding down on any fret. If you understand this then you should be able to play this... Smoke On The Water: e------------------------------------------------------ B------------------------------------------------------ G------------------------------------------------------ D------------------------------------------------------ A------------------------------------------------------ E---0--3--6------0--3--7-6------0--3--6---3-0----- Hope you understand and good luck with it all =D
E Em C G G7 D D7 These are easy chords that turn up a bit.
You missed A, Am and A7 as they're easy chords that fit in well with things too. Oh, also, E
E was the first one I said :s Also when learning G don't use your index finger. Put your little finger on the 1st string, your ring on the 1st and middle on the 2nd. That way you can keep your index finger ready for changing to G7, and it also makes it easier to change to C.
I think that would be pretty fucking hard for a beginner to do.
G7 can be played in a multitude of ways, you can play it by placing any spare finger on the third fret third string.
I reccomend getting lessons for at least a year or 2, learning a buncha chords and riffs here and there. (User was banned for this post ("Don't bump old threads unless you have something good to say. You'll be unbanned in an hour." - SilverHammer))
