DETROIT, MI - Johnathan L. Sails lied to become a swim instructor at East Detroit High School and took the time to change into swim attire before attempting to save 14-year-old KeAir Swift, who was drowning in the school's swimming pool, says Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith.
Sails, 24, was sitting in the bleachers outside the immediate pool area, Smith told MLive Detroit in an interview, and at first ignored pleas from KeAir's classmates to help the student who could not swim and was spotted at the bottom of the pool. The incident occurred about 1 p.m. on Nov. 8.
"He's just messing around," the prosecutor said was Sails' initial reaction. Sails responded when the students returned a second time. Sails, with the help of a janitor, was trying to get KeAir out of the pool using some nearby equipment, Smith said, and when he was unsuccessful headed off for the locker room to change his clothes.
"Once he walked away from the pool area to change, that was all the gross negligence I needed," Smith said.
Upon his return, Sails entered the pool and was still unable to pull KeAir from beneath the surface, at which time the vice principal heard the commotion, entered the pool area and immediately dove into the water, still wearing a dress suit, and pulled KeAir to the side of the pool.
It was too late. Three days later KeAir was taken off of life support and died.

Fucking pussy, I have a vivid memory in my head of going under in my friends pool and my mother jumping in clothes, shoes + cell phone wallet everything to save me. I hope he gets charged to the fullest extent of the law
Sigh. People in Detroit.
I hated living there.
Fucking bastard.

what the christ
it's safer to check first instead of just going "nah, it's probably just a prank guys"
Like the #1 rule of life guarding is "you probably won't realize somebodies drowning, they might not even splash around and ask for help, hell sometimes their friends might not even realize". This guy was just plain fucking stupid.
This guy is not only scum but is also very dumb.
what a moron
whats a fucking phone/your clothes worth vs someones life.

I have a lot of respect for this vice principal, and it's a strong contrast to the swimming instructor.
What a stupid piece of shit, I can understand thinking it's a joke for a few seconds, but it would be obvious, and really?? Changing your clothes? ? ?

And even if it is a joke, you should check anyway, you can punish them if they did troll you
KeAir Swift
Holy fuck I got jipped on my name give me his.
SO how many years you think this idiot will be in jail for?

More like needs a promotion.
Absolutely disgusting.

None of them thought to help, especially after the substitute instructor walked away?

Did you miss the part where the class was to learn how to swim?
SO how many years you think this idiot will be in jail for?
This would go under Criminally Negligent Homicide, which is a class E felony, which means imprisonment for up to 5 years, along with the other punishments that come from being registered as a convicted felon. A swim instructor letting a boy drown because she didn't want to get her clothes wet AND lying about her amount of training means she'll probably get close to the maximum sentence unless she has a really good lawyer.
I hate to say it but shouldn't the school have done a proper background check??
Yes it's atrocious this cunt went to change clothes while a kid was drowning but the school is also to blame for this tragedy.
"yeah uh ok, i'll save you in just a sec, just have to get in my swimming gear, you'll be fine"
Damn he's so shameful when he dies he deserves to be shot into the sun. I hope that guilt that stays with him his whole life was worth the 5 second decision he made by lying about his training that ended up costing someone their ENTIRE life; not even some of this kids life. He didn't even get the chance to live yet, he was fucking 14.
That lifeguard got some serious time management issues
what could he have possibly have had to gain from lying about this shit?
None of them thought to help, especially after the substitute instructor walked away?
Yeah they should of used their expert swimming skills to do it.
