That's the basic idea behind ReRoll. In development at Pixyul, a new studio created by two former Ubisoft developers, ReRoll uses civilian aerial drones to capture images from all over the globe which are then stitched together to create the in-game world. Further, ReRoll employs a "Reality Sync System," that takes real-time environmental data from our reality and feeds it into the game. If it's snowing in Chicago, ReRoll's virtual rendition of the Windy City will likewise be blanketed in fluffy white flakes, Pixyul claims.
source: http://www.joystiq.com/2014/02/03/ex-ubisoft-devs-unveil-reroll-an-ambitious-stab-at-turning-real/
I had an idea for sometihng like this when I was a kid. Except it was in first person.
Pretty ambitious if you ask me. Also good luck mapping out China or North Korea.
If this game is going to be anything like this says, it's going to be freaking awesome. I wonder what they're going to do for the oceans?
why scan all of earth's terrain by themselves when there are already GIS databases of high enough resolution?
This seems... ambitious.
why scan all of earth's terrain by themselves when there are already GIS databases of high enough resolution?
GIS database is what the man wants you to think the world is. you really think the earths like how they say it is bro wow
With something like this I'm worried the recreation of the world thing will be the major selling point and the actual gameplay won't be that good.
If they really remake the entire world exactly how it is now, I'm just going to take my character to my actual house and live there.
More and more games are concentrating on realism, It's kind of sad, I wish the industry could begin to concentrate more on worlds designed around a set stylistic choice or vision. Stuff like Shadow of the Colossus was fantastic because the world presented a story in it's self, you could play that game without the cut scenes and it would still be fantastic. Its more difficult to do that kind of thing in a photo realistic environment.
0:22 shows an arrow pointing towards Iraq, but the picture is of the 12 Apostles in Australia on the opposite side of the world. 0/10
Isn't this just like Anteworld/Outerra?
If they really remake the entire world exactly how it is now, I'm just going to take my character to my actual house and live there.
Live out your life playing a game where you play a character living out your life playing a game where he plays a character living out his life playing a game where he plays a character living out his life playing a game where he is a japanese school girl who is also a dragon and a wizard robot.
Maybe you can go to your own house onto your own computer in the game and play ReRoll within ReRoll.

I think it would work better as just a sandbox game, you know just drive around the world. Drive a monster truck down the Himalayas or something.
Pretty ambitious if you ask me. Also good luck mapping out China or North Korea.
It's based on an apocalypse setting, china and NK being nuclear wastelands you cannot explore would probably be a plot point
I wonder how many of those drones they will lose because of rednecks shooting them out of the sky.
I want the ability to loot CERN for its superconducting magnets.
another open world survival action rpg with crafting sounds boring
Pretty ambitious if you ask me. Also good luck mapping out China or North Korea.
Now I want them to add NK and have a boss fight with Kim Jong Un
Unfortunately I just don't think they can do it without significant sacrifices somewhere in the rendition. We still just don't have the raw power capable of rendering something like this. They can stream it a la Google Earth, but then you have massive texture smearing, pop-in, geometry formation delay and not to mention FPS dives and delays as you wait on content (and then there's streaming all of that globally to all the players, a nightmare!). Curious to see how they tackle it in the final product. Maybe players can be isolated and grouped into 'shards' like MMO's do, to reduce the overall workload. Then as you move into a new area you get a short load screen as it buffers the next major batch of data content. I don't know, I can't think of a feasible way to do it all.

I could go out and find treasure on an island ingame somewhere, than actually go and get that treasure and get rich Wow, thanks Reroll!
Looks a lot more interesting that that "Get Even" game, lets be honest. Very excited for this, this is something I've always wanted in a game. [editline]3rd February 2014[/editline] Too bad it isn't an FPS though, I personally prefer that, #sorrynotsorry
How the fuck are they going to break through forest canopy with drones? They can take as many pictures as they want, but it can't be easy to generate a 3D model of a forested location when you consider how complex they become with branches and such. No wonder they used a mountain as an example.
Sounds like they are trying to build hype for something that is never going to happen.

Oh boy, constantly checking my phone to make sure my fake man is following his diet an exercise regimen. Sounds riveting.
a japanese school girl who is also a dragon and a wizard robot.
can i just have this as a game
