Hundreds of neo-Nazis in Germany have gone underground
German police are hunting for hundreds of neo-Nazis. The Interior Ministry says there was a significant jump in outstanding arrest warrants in 2016. Experts believe that right-wing terrorist networks pose a threat.
Chancellor Angela Merkel said just a few days ago in her New Year address that the most difficult test Germany faces is Islamist terrorism. But terrorism in Germany is not exclusively Islamist. It can also come from the political left or - as the National Socialist Underground (NSU) has recently demonstrated - from the right.
The interior ministry said in a December response to a parliamentary interpellation from representatives of the Left Party that just under 600 arrest warrants for neo-Nazis were still outstanding. Some 403 arrest warrants were issued in the first 10 months of 2016 alone. In total, warrants were issued against 454 individuals who, in the official jargon, "have been deemed on account of relevant police information to belong to the category 'crime motivated by the political right.'" Not all of these right-wing extremists are being sought for politically motivated crimes, but in 92 cases the arrest warrant does indeed relate to a politically motivated offense.
Going underground encourages radicalization
According to Matthias Quent, a Jena-based researcher into right-wing extremism, the number of neo-Nazis who have gone underground increases the risk of creating new right-wing extremist terrorist structures. In an interview with DW, Quent emphasized that going underground could lead to further radicalization and to political aims being pursued more determinedly, with violence.
This corresponds with the interior ministry's latest annual report on the defense of the constitution, which talks about an "exorbitant increase in right-wing extremist violence." The authors go on to say that "anti-asylum agitation creates a sounding board for right-wing extremist ideology fragments. Right-wing extremism gains connectivity," with the result that violence and crimes motivated by right-wing extremism and directed against asylum-seekers' accommodation increased more than five-fold in 2015 compared to the previous year. The report also found that after years in decline, the right-wing extremist scene is now attracting members again. The number of right-wing extremist-oriented people is estimated at just under 23,000.
Uninhibited discourse
Just as in France, where mosques were targeted in the aftermath of the Islamist terrorist attacks, the deadly attack on Berlin's Breitscheidplatz, where a truck was driven into a Christmas market, may inflame sentiments in right-wing circles. Matthias Quent says he has already observed on social networks that the threshold for verbal violence has fallen.
"The discourse is incredibly uninhibited," he told DW. "If the perception is that the state is no longer capable of protecting its borders, or its people, from terrorism, there is an increase in the perceived legitimacy of forming one's own organizations, of resorting to violence oneself, of arming oneself."
One can, for example, arm oneself online. A Russian-registered German-language website with the name "Migrantenschreck" ("Scourge of Migrants”) offers items such as crossbows or weapons that shoot hard rubber bullets. A gun costing 749 euros ($791) is described as follows: "An incredible 130-joule muzzle velocity speaks for itself, guaranteeing the successful use of this product."

Looks like the Nazi hunting profession could be a thing again. I wouldn't mind signing up to be one, but would like to play it Dog the Bounty Hunter style and use the same Rubber bullet "Migrantenschreck" guns for my tools of trade. :v:
But honestly the numbers are pretty low really. Still interesting to know there a few hundred "underground" Nazis lurking around.
I was hoping that this meant that they had actually gone under the ground, never to be seen again.
The sooner these attitudes are snuffed out and, moreover, not bred and encouraged by recent demagogues, the better. As hard as it seems to resist to these people, responding with fear, disdain, alienation, and especially violence towards broad ethnic groups is just about the worst possible response to any sort of terrorism or other conceived threat.

This is what happens in any country where you get people in numbers feeling your country has gone sideways etc, just in this situation they have a name.
Same article basically in German from almost exactly one year ago

Honestly it doesn't surprise me that you of all people would have power fantasies / of grandeur about playing the hero against those evil Nazis.
This is what happens in any country where you get people in numbers feeling your country has gone sideways etc, just in this situation they have a name.
Well no not exactly. There are a number of different outcomes to "people in numbers feeling your country has gone sideways etc". When those people unite and identify with their class, you get the proletariat assuming the means of production. When those people unite and identify with their race, you get fascism. That might be somewhat reductionist in theory, but in practice that's practically what we've observed throughout history.
In times of "people in numbers feeling your country has gone sideways etc" (which is increasingly becoming a global phenomenon, if we hadn't already reached the stage of global politics by WW2), you see people radicalize and identify with more inherently radical beliefs and ideas of society. Turns out that's what led to one of the most catastrophic mistakes in human history, i.e. people taking fascism as anything but a destructive and flawed ideology. You can see this pattern emerging again, with people pulling more towards the right and more towards the left in recent years after being let down by an inefficient government, a crippling global recession we still havent recovered from, and an increasingly obvious failure of capitalism in an increasingly global economy.
Maybe I'm pessimistic and doomsaying here but the signs are definitely there. What will determine what happens as we move forward is how we respond to these tensions and strains, as individuals and as a whole.
This was bound to happen the second cultures collided. Thankfully the numbers are a bit lower then some previous estimates, but the far-right is definitely on the rise around the western hemisphere.
And another one from 2014

Those goddamn neo nazi's are at it again! avoiding them arrest warrants.
This just seems like typical smoke to hide the real problem, Migrants.
Also reminder to people a German cop insulted Merkel indirectly and is facing criminal charges, Wouldn't be surprised if many people are called "nazi's" and have warrants put on them and they went into hiding to avoid bogus charges.

Migrants and Refugees are not going away. The best that we can do is properly accommodate them, integrate them, and welcome them within reasonable logistical ability. I consider actual fucking neo nazis to be a bigger problem than that.

We Americans have school shooting articles that keep popping up like clockwork, and Germany has some on secret Neo-nazi groups that are somewhere.
Sometimes that is how the news work in certain countries. :v:
But I actually just saw this on DW today and thought to post it since it had some interesting tidbits like the website.

It's indeed a pretty constant issue here. Sometimes an actual terrorist cell forms, but police usually breaks those up before someone dies.

That's a little much. Dude was just trying to be a bit lighthearted.
The problem of nazism is exaggerated. Nazis are either underground or in their own cirklejerks, while communists are allowed to spew their shitty beliefs openly and without consequence.
When will they be hunted down? I suppose never, too many of current Western politicians used to be communists, fascinated with communism or other kinds of useful idiots.

The only place I know of where communists are a thing in the West is Spain.
Where exactly are communists allowed to spew their ideas without being mocked?

Say what?
Nazis are ok but communists should be "hunted down" and "too many of the... I can't go on.
You're utterly mad.

Well... Everywhere? I know for a fact in Poland that commies organize rallies where they fly Soviet Union flags and whatnot. They also do it on the 1st of May in Warsaw. I feel I don't even have to mention Antifa.
Without being mocked? Nowhere I guess, most of the population laugh at those idiots, lol. But they still are public.

Here in Slovenia communists are generally people behind the scenes that control political sphere. I am not sure if this is true but this is what people generally tell me. But you could see some lefties that were seen in parliament with red star hats and so on, so there is some truth to it.
In Slovenia, the red star is respected as a symbol of resistance against fascism and Nazism. On March 21, 2011, Slovenia issued a two-euro commemorative coin to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Franc Rozman, a partizan commander, featuring a large star that represented a red star.
I don't think he meant that man

Hmm perhaps, maybe I got the wrong impression from his post.
Butwhatabout Flat Earthers?
I hope these nazi bastards are all locked away for good. They are a threat to society from their ideology alone and should not be allowed to coexist with our modern world.
Perhaps all that fourth reich shitposting on /pol/ isnt just the shenanigans of bored high schoolers after all...

you can't really kill an idea, regardless of how awful it is
in addition, I believe this sort of attitude only fuels the fire.
in fact, even the article is aware of this and states:
Going underground encourages radicalization

I hope these nazi bastards are all locked away for good. They are a threat to society from their ideology alone and should not be allowed to coexist with our modern world.
As long as they don't quite call for violence, I'd rather have it out in the open where it faces direct backlash from the rest of society.
Besides, Germany's version of 'our modern world' is one where ideas themselves aren't outlawed*. We only do that with matters of immediate harm and go with more appropriate (and seemingly pretty effective) measures for the rest.
*Except for publication of holocaust denials and certain symbols used by the nazis.
