American Airlines and US Airways have announced plans to merge, in a deal that would form the world's biggest airline.

The combined company, which will have an implied equity value of approximately $11bn, will become a fully operating entity following American's pending bankruptcy proceeding, according to a news release.
The newly-formed company, keeping the name American Airlines, will be headquartered in American's Dallas-Fort Worth base in Texas.
A merger would assemble a powerful fleet of about 1,530 mainline and regional aircraft flying some 6,428 daily flights. Combined revenues of $38.7bn in 2012 would put them slightly ahead of United and Delta Airlines.
Not familiar with American airlines, a statement made annoying to say due to American Airlines. This a good thing or a bad thing?
I always thought that Northwest and Southwest should merge to form West Airlines.

I doubt this will pass federal muster. Would create too much of a monopoly.

Have you bean mayo tomato oh wait wrong thread
That double a is a image engrained into my American heart
Unless this brings about a big change to their policies, I'm still flying Southwest. AA has some of the most asinine policies of any Airline I've ever been on. I had a shoe box as carry on once. Literally a shoe box with paper in it, and they wanted me to check it because it was "too large".

Does American government still even break up monopolies anymore? We are never having another AT&T level break like in the 70's, we are too corporate loving now
I thought I saw heard/saw this before, like a few months ago.
Estonian Air is doing the same with FlyBe I believe.
Like all oligopoly market mergers, the result will be higher cost and shittier service.
Go deregulation!

I'm pretty sure I will die of old age before I see our government do any more trust-busting.

AA was already about to go under and this just barely puts them over United and Delta airlines profit.
American Airlines was/is always terrible. I have yet to fly with them and not have problems.
Delta/United/Southwest 4lyfe
Pretty soon there's only going to be a handful of airlines. United and Continental merged, now these guys. Virgin should just buy British Airways and Quantas and get it over with.

They've been reworking their image and branding every since filing for bankruptcy anyway, this is their new logo:

I do like the new airplane livery they did more than the bare polished metal and stripes they had before too.
