Arizona issues 1st certifications for use of medical marijuana

PHOENIX - The first Arizonan who got state permission to legally use marijuana is not some 22-year-old claiming he's in pain.
It's a 60-year-old Scottsdale resident living with Crohn's disease.
That, coupled with other statistics from the first day Arizonans could get certified to buy, possess and use marijuana, pleases state health director Will Humble. He said that if the patterns hold, it will prove Arizona has successfully created a medical-marijuana program as opposed to a recreational one.
The state's online application process for certifying people to buy, possess and use marijuana went live at 8 a.m. Thursday. Humble said the first applicant - his name is not a public record - had his paperwork reviewed and approved within a half hour, paving the way for the state to send him a card certifying him as a "qualifying patient."
That allows him, like everyone else who gets a card, to purchase up to 2 1/2 ounces of marijuana every two weeks.
For the moment, though, none of the patients or the people who are certified as their caregivers will be buying anything, at least not legally. That's because the state is still going through the process of licensing the 125 dispensaries that will be allowed under Arizona law to sell the drug.
A provision in the 2010 voter-approved law says people who live at least 25 miles from a dispensary are entitled to grow their own medication. And with no clinics now and none anticipated for months, that means everyone.
In the first nine hours after the website went "live," Humble said 110 people submitted applications. But only about two-thirds of those ended up with health officials putting a card in an envelope.
The rest? Humble said one of the biggest problems involved the electronic photographs that are required so they can become part of the ID card.
"If it wasn't exactly 2 inches by 2 inches, the computer was rejecting it," he said. Humble said the technical-support team worked that out during the day.
But he said there also were some problems with the pictures that some would-be marijuana users submitted. Humble said they simply found a photo of themselves on their computer and decided that would suffice.
It did not.
"It was a picture of them on their Harley next to a tree in the shade and it wasn't a clear picture," he said.
Humble said he actually expected more applications, as the law allowed marijuana patients to go to their doctors to get the certification ahead of time. But with the application process available online on a 24/7 basis, there may be people figuring they'd wait until the evening, he said.
The law says only those diagnosed by a doctor with certain medical conditions can get the required state certification. These include diseases like glaucoma and AIDS, as well as chronic or debilitating conditions that lead to severe and chronic pain.
The Department of Health Services also imposed various restrictions which Humble said are designed to keep physicians from setting up shop as "certification mills" to provide cards for those who want the drug strictly for recreational purposes.
Humble said he expects the number of certified users a year from now could be as few as 20,000 or as many as 100,000.
Humble acknowledged more than half of the medical conditions reported fell into the chronic-pain category, a classification he conceded could be abused. But he said there is no reason to believe doctors who made the certifications were acting improperly.
He also noted that nearly half the applications came from people at least 40 years old, with 22 percent from those 51 and older.
He said states where the program has become largely recreational have the dominant group as men in their 20s and early 30s.
Just legalize the damn thing already so people will stop bitching.
That's a high achievement.

Makes the government look weak, like they couldn't handle the bitching and gave in

The government is supposed to give in to bitching. It's called democracy.

Let's plant poisonous weeds in any field where cows graze. It probably will fuck shit up, but then again who gives a fuck it's a god damn plant.

In all honesty, it seems that way. I'm no different than anyone else, I just like weed because it takes my stress away, helps me focus on work more, and when I do have pain I can definitely feel the analgesic effects. I also started smoking due to my inability to feel pain medications like Vicodin.

Boxes ahoy!
Edit:
It'd probably make the beef taste better.

I don't smoke and most likely never will (I don't plan on ever starting), but if I can see that legalizing marijuana will take a lot of problems away, why can't any government see it?

No don't legalize it will just make the potheads feel like they won something and I hate potheads more than anything in this world.
Instead crack down on marijuana HARDER and send anybody CAUGHT with it to concentration camps, where they will be forced to make napalm bombs that will be used to bomb Marijuana fields in Latin American countries, and make a bid with the more intellectual class of Potheads that if they agree to engineer an airborne super virus that latches on to every organism but only harms marijuana, then they may live.
The point is to irradicate marijuana from this earth. Why? Because my ex girlfriend was an annoying pothead. and thats the only reason why.

It is only beneficial in it's oil form, I have seen what this does to people, makes them very stupid.

Death to the unproductive drug infused weaklings. In the future Age of freedom and mental superiority, those that use mind altering drugs will be exterminated, leading way for my master race of Maturity and Adults who deal with problems not with drugs but with discipline.
Don't think Marijuana is alone here. Alcohol is going with it too.

Oh and something about trickle down economics too

The government already looks weak. They are disregarding a bunch of scientific studies that show the benefits of this drug.
It's absolutely sickening that the people in the government don't give a shit about the people of this nation. All they care about is the public "image." They will disregard any and all counter evidence and logic just to get more votes.
The government is corrupt and no one seems to give a shit enough to try to fix it.

Benefits?

I was one of the first people in Arizona to get a Medical Marijuana license. Fibromyalgia....
Benefits?
(dumb meme)
It's extra hilarious because there actually are benefits to pot :v:
And if Arizona and New Mexico can do this, maybe it'll spread over to Texas. A man can dream...
There are benefits, but only in it's oil form.
That's total bullshit. The active cannabinoids in oil are the exact same as in the buds, just more concentrated. If anything oil has the potential to be more 'harmful' (if there was any physical harm in the first place).
