In a joint statement on Friday the Australian, US, New Zealand and Netherlands governments urged responsible behaviour from whalers and protesters and condemned 'any actions that imperil human life at sea'. The call comes after a US appeals court this week issued an injunction ordering Sea Shepherd and its head Paul Watson not to physically attack or endanger the whaling ships. The protest ship must remain at least 450 metres from them at all times, the court ruled. The order was sought by the Institute of Cetacean Research (ICR), which undertakes the Japanese government's whaling programme through a loophole in International Whaling Commission rules that allows whales to be killed for research. The two sides have previously clashed, with protesters throwing glass bottles containing paint or butyric acid at the whaling ships, and the whalers responding with water cannons. The four governments expressed their respect for the right to peaceful protest, including on the high seas, but condemned any dangerous or unlawful behaviour. 'We are prepared to deal with unlawful activity in accordance with relevant international and domestic laws,' the governments said. A resolution passed by the International Maritime Organisation in 2010 compels whaling vessels to ensure the safety of protesters during demonstrations, rallies or confrontations on the high seas. Australia remains resolutely opposed to commercial whaling, including so-called 'scientific' whaling, and has expressed concern about hunting activities in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. Lethal research techniques have no place in modern whale conservation, and the governments pledged to take further action on this issue and uphold the International Whaling Commission's global moratorium on commercial whaling.
The whale research objective this year is to let the Japanese men 'research' the taste of whale meat.

time for australia to nuke japan
Uh, maybe I'm completely off-base here, but did anyone read the article? The Australians aren't planning on stopping the Japanese from whaling. They're just telling the whalers not to threaten protestors, and the protestors won't mess with them. Until they get off their collective asses and call the Japanese out on their bullshit, I don't think they're doing enough.
I think it's despicable that Japan lets them continue to catch whale for 'whale research' when they know full well they are just attempting to catch whale to sell and consume.

[editline]21st December 2012[/editline]
its the japanese government thats doing it
Not only is it government run, but they were given $29 Million USD of the Tsunami Relief Fund to keep running as they haven't made a profit in years.

[editline]22nd December 2012[/editline] i really don't get why they do it except to be cartoonishly evil.
i really don't get why they do it except to be cartoonishly evil.
There was a cracked article about it. Apparently, at the end of WW2, many Japanese were starving so they started whaling so they could actually eat stuff. I guess it's kinda become a tradition, and they don't let tradition go in Japan.
Worse than Hitler
*Currently the only exception to Godwin's Law
What the fuck are they "researching" anyway? How does one successfully "research" a species of sea life by slaughtering them?
Imagine if Japan went to war with Australia over whales. That'd be fucking weird.
