The phone of the Norwegian scientist May-Britt Moser suddenly rang. She didn't recognize the number, and thus decided to ignore it. After a while, she answered anyway, a decision which led to the happiest moment of her entire career. She was told she'd been awarded the Nobel prize in physiology.
Her husband, Edvard Moser, whom she's sharing the prize with, was on a plane at the time, completely unaware.

This year's Physiology and Medicine prize is shared between three co-working scientists. One half belongs to the American scientist John O´Keefe, and the other half belongs to the Moser couple.

When the names of the award-winners were revealed earlier today, the motivation of the Nobel-Committee was:

[I]"How can we understand where in a space we're currently located? How can we find our way from one location to another? How does the brain generate and store this code for future and current use? This year's Nobel-prize winners have discovered the circuitry for a positioning-system, a sort of integrated "GPS-system" within the brain which makes it possible for us to navigate within a space. Their work has revealed and given an understanding behind the very complex mechanics of the brain's nervecells processing this data."

In Norway, a pandemic of euphoria has broken out nation-wide, as this is the first time in history a Norwegian person receives a Nobel prize.
