Even though teens and young adults seem to run on little sleep, a new study by Columbia University finds that teens actually need more sleep than younger children.
The study, which looked at the sleep habits of over 15,000 high school and college students, found that those who went to bed after midnight on a regular basis were at 24% higher risk of depression compared to those who turned in by 10pm.
“It is a common perception and societal expectation that adolescents do not need as much sleep as pre-adolescents, yet studies suggest that adolescents may actually require more sleep,” said James Gangwisch, an author of the report.
Those who stayed up late and got less than eight hours of sleep also are 20% more likely to have suicidal thoughts.
And, the less sleep, the higher the rates of depression and suicidal thoughts become: adolescents who slept five hours or less a night were 71% more likely to suffer from depression and 48% more at risk of becoming suicidal.
New job opportunity: Emo hunter. You are equipped with one standard-issue tranquilizer gun, capable of knocking out a medium-sized dog, a kit of needles for close-quarters 'combat'. Camouflage gear can be arranged if needed. You get paid by each body returned to a designated rehab facility. Those caught will stay at rehab facility until deemed fit to be released.
But in all honestly, this is common fucking knowledge.
Mom, I can't go to school, i'm depressed.
Well no shit.
I am depressed, I am home all day sleeping and getting nothing done in my life, this study sucks
I'd be sad too if I was always tired.
But depression also cuases insomnia.
what the fuck i get like 5 hours sleep and im so happy with my life.......
what the fuck i get like 5 hours sleep and im so happy with my life.......
then you're one of "72%" that are 'normal'. Be 'proud'.
It certainly helps, but it's only temporary I feel like.
Horse-shit.
It's transient, like happiness. You feel happy for a moment, then it's torn away from you.
I literally get 2 to 4 hours of sleep, and I'm fine.
One of the symptoms of depression is chronic tiredness, ironically.
Correlation doesn't equal causation. Stop asking why you're fine even though you don't get much sleep.
I get 9 hours of sleep on school days, and for the past two weeks i've gotten 12 hours of sleep... I'm still depressed.
Depression doesn't means being sad, it also can be tiredness, profound laziness, and so on.
Well no shit, if you don't get sleep then you aren't as healthy, mentally or physically. It's no surprise that a cause for depression is lack of sleep to me.

Depression is almost always sadness mixed with low motivation and low energy, not just one or another.
Rated dumb as in "No shit" to the scientists.
Depression doesn't means being sad, it also can be tiredness, profound laziness, and so on.
Tiredness, profound laziness.. Sounds like my life.
I got close to killing myself.
Then I slept and woke up in a great mood.
I see the reason teens are so depress is because they lack sleep. So like the posters above me, no shit.
I tend to be sleeping half day away, and I have suicidal thoughts. Fact is I like questioning things at night, cause I've got nothing else to do really.
But depression also cuases insomnia.
and insomnia causes lack of sleep
so you get more depressed, and therefore become a bigger insomniac
:psyduck:
THERE IS NO ESCAPE
That's why I've been so depressed lately, since it's break I go to sleep late! Genius!

Depression also causes tiredness. Some people suffer from Insomnia but others(like me) suffer from sleeping 12-14 hours a day sometimes.

Exactly the case with me. And feeling "love" makes it a fuck ton worse.
Now if only sleep fought off depression in adults.

That would be a life saver to many. Unfortunately, it just doesn't work that way...
"The study, which looked at the sleep habits of over 15,000 high school and college students, found that those who went to bed after midnight on a regular basis were at 24% higher risk of depression compared to those who turned in by 10pm."
I'm pretty sure they have that either backwards or entirely wrong. Who makes it a habit to go to bed after midnight and then they suffer from depression?
