Tumblr has a really tiny filesize limit for gifs, so people upload them in 2 second segments with half the colours removed

You can compress a 4.5MB gif to 286kb just by changing the format to one that doesn't suck ass

Gif really is awful, I wonder why it hasn't been updated.
The one-second .GIFs are one of the things I hate most about tumblr. There's such a small amount of animation that it's fucking pointless; you'd get the same effect from a static image and plaintext.

Gif started as a standard for incorporating graphics into web-based development. Tons of old websites back in the 90's used gifs for buttons, banners, and loads of other things that are largely accomplished nowadays with pure CSS or PNGs.
