Some of the 3,586-pounds of cocaine and $1.3 million seized by narcotics officers in New York in 1997. Cocaine use in the U.S. has dropped by almost half since 2006.

In the 1980s, if you moved in certain circles — or picked up the newspaper — a certain white powder was everywhere, common as dust.
But cocaine use in America has dropped by almost half since 2006, The Christian Science Monitor reports. The National Survey on Drug Use and Health shows that .5 percent of the population used cocaine in 2011, compared to 1 percent of the population in 2006.

it's probably because less people have the money to waste on it; at least here people don't even sell coke in clubs anymore because no-one has the money
And politicians will use this as fuel for the war on drugs and how it's "working"
Smoke weed :) Dont Sniff!

:-)
Ritalin (concerta) replaced it. Similar drug, but judging from the last line of the article they don't see prescription abuse (massive doses to party) as a problem. Maybe not, could be metth, bath salts, and molly just filled the gap. Or maybe we're are getting better about it. The people trying it and not becoming addicts (you can use some drugs sometimes without going crazy for them). It is definitely interesting though.

That's not the real reason mate. It can't even be blamed on the recession really, since recovery is now underway.

Even if the first part was true, it wouldn't be because ~recovery is now underway~ lmao

We haven't been stuck in an constant recession since 2008 mind you. Things will be picking up as the decade continues.
Cocaine is a helluva drug...
Cocaine, not even half the times
cocaine isn't even the same as it was 20 years ago. the stuff you can buy off the streets is 60% cut with Meth. people avoid it like the plague because no one wants to the "that" meth addict everyone knows about.
Snorting Adderall and Ritalin is the new coke.
Ugh, Cocaine is so 1985.

Thank you, someone else who noticed this. Usually concerta or at least called by that brand name around here for the methylphenidate though.
Sweet, now that coke is out, I can be a fucking hipster with my habit

If your going to get annoyed that no ones reading it, put it in the OP. I hate it when the most important parts of the article aren't actually in the OP.
coke is like 50% baking soda nowadays
the research chemical market probably took a shit on the coke market
As common as dust then, half as common as dust now?
So began the rise of Pepsi Co.
Maybe it's because of people don't have enough money for cocaine or do not want to end up getting caught with an illegal substance and serve jail time thus going for a legal high such as bath salts.
It's good cocaine is used less, but I think a lot of those users stepped over to legal highs.
amphetamines last longer, give a stronger high, and are way cheaper than cocaine. cocaine is a novelty. you grab a gram once or twice just to say you did it, but cocaine is pretty shit as far as psychostimulants go.

Cocaine is shorter than amps but coke remains supreme in the strength of high. Ritalin is merely a coke lite, but longer-lasting.
Life is my addiction~
Pharmaceuticals are getting more fashionable like coke used to be. See lean, oxy, adderall etc.

Not surprised. We dont see crack ever nowadays at the department.. heroin and prescription drugs are on the high rise though.
Over the last four years, Kerlikowske says, drug enforcement has changed "not only rapidly, but dramatically." It has more of a public health focus, he says, with collaborations across agencies and levels of government.
A lot of people dont know about this. The war on drugs is moving towards just education about the drugs instead of just saying "this is bad." The cross-agency work too has deeply involved the US with other nations.

Just wondering, what's your opinion on the legalization of various drugs

Or maybe it's because they overdosed on that or some other cheap replacement like krokodil which not only ate their brains, but their flesh also.
