According to APD, police were dispatched to America's Best Value Inn located in the 2100 block of Menaul NE around 2 p.m. Albuquerque police say their initial investigation leads them to believe it was an accident, but they are waiting to do a safe house interview with the boy and the woman's 2-year-old daughter before deciding if anyone should be charged. Justin Reynolds says he and his pregnant girlfriend Monique Villescas were getting ready to order pizza when the incident occurred. "It was like if I was to get up shake your hand and sat back down. That's how fast it happened, "said Reynolds." All of a sudden we heard a gun go off and the next minute I realized my girlfriend was bleeding. Then I sat down and realized I was shot too." Police say the couple's toddler was able to take a handgun out of his mother's purse and fired one shot. The bullet hit the father in the buttock, then exited through the man's hip and struck the mother in the right shoulder. Reynolds is grateful the bullet didn't hit his girlfriend's two-year-old daughter who was sitting right next to her. He said he then called 911 and grabbed some towels to try to stop her bleeding. "I just took action right away. I was more worried about my girlfriend than myself and anything else that was going on. And my son because I didn't know if he had shot himself or not. He was shocked and crying. It was traumatizing," said Reynolds. Reynolds was released from the hospital Saturday afternoon and Villescas is currently in stable condition. Doctors are keeping her under observation in case she goes into labor early. Both children were placed on a 48 hour hold with CYFD. APD says the case will be forwarded to the DA's office and pending charges of felony criminal negligence will be reviewed on both parents.
alt source CNN
At least nobody was killed or seriously injured. Sounds like it was pretty close for the daugher though
How incredibly stupid do you have to be to be carrying a handgun around children like that and not keep it secured?
How did the kid get the safety off so quick? [editline]1st February 2015[/editline] Don't tell me she walks around with a gun in her purse and doesn't keep the safety on.
APD says the case will be forwarded to the DA's office and pending charges of felony criminal negligence will be reviewed on both parents.
God I hope they get hit with something, well, besides the bullet. Why is gun safety so hard for people to understand? You don't leave firearms laying around, much less ones that are loaded.

[editline]1st February 2015[/editline] Don't tell me she walks around with a gun in her purse and doesn't keep the safety on.
The article doesn't specify what kind of handgun as far as I can see. Revolvers don't have safeties and are incredibly common concealed carry handguns, so that could be the reason. Not all revolvers have particularly heavy trigger pulls either, so it's completely feasible for a child to be able to operate it. If anything, this means it was secured extremely poorly. With children around, and in such a non-threatening environment, at least keep the goddamn thing out of the kid's reach.
Don't tell me she walks around with a gun in her purse and doesn't keep the safety on.
Judging by the guy they interviewed in the video, they don't look like they'd be the smartest couple. A lot of subcompact 9s don't have safeties.
It's stupid people with young children can legally get concealed carry without a safety. It's a disaster waiting to happen.
Not all firearms have safeties, but that doesn't mean you can't ensure that it is safe from children.
A lot of subcompact 9s don't have safeties.
That doesn't sound like a good idea.
Revolvers don't have safeties
Incorrect. EDIT: Most don't, but safety mechanisms do exist on some models of revolver.
Not all firearms have safeties, but that doesn't mean you can't ensure that it is safe from children.
Yeah, like "Don't carry a handgun in your fucking purse".
How incredibly stupid do you have to be to be carrying a handgun around children like that and not keep it secured?
Where can you secure it in a hotel room? Most I have been in, you're lucky if they have a small dresser in the room. I suppose you could bring a mobile gun safe, though that kinda defeats the purpose of a gun kept for self defence.
Yeah, like "Don't carry a handgun in your fucking purse".
Most women I know who concealed carry keep it there, though quite a few women wear clothing that is tight and have no pockets. [editline]1st February 2015[/editline]
You sure as hell don't just leave it sitting in a fucking purse where children can reach it.
Where else do you put it? In the dresser where the children can still reach it?
that makes sense, I just assumed all weapons have safeties being rather ignorant of/about them
Whenever I take my handgun anywhere, the safety is ALWAYS on no matter what, and I always leave the clip out of the actual gun. People should be required to take gun safety classes before they're able to purchase a weapon and should show their certificate for passing the class.
The bullet hit the father in the buttock

"Then I sat down and realized I was shot too"
That's gonna sting.

Failing that, how about fucking paying attention to your kids and making sure they don't go near the purse where you know there's a hand-gun in it?
completely their own fault for handling a minor a weapon
Incorrect.
No, he's quite correct, most revolvers don't have safeties in the sense that there is something on the gun you activate that prevents it from firing. Nowadays, most anything that has double-action capability has no safety, and double-action revolvers have really never had safeties.
That doesn't sound like a good idea.
Giving out gun licenses like flyers also doesn't. thread becomes about gun control in 3... 2... 1... (User was banned for this post ("Why reply?" - SteveUK))
thread becomes about gun control in 3... 2... 1...
WHY DID THEY HAVE A GUN UGGH THEY SHOULD'VE KEPT THE SAFETY ON AND KEPT THE GUN AWAY FROM THE KIDS :v:
You see if the parents had another gun they could have shot the kid back. One more reason to always carry two guns with you.
A lot of subcompact 9s don't have safeties.
Well those kinda guns definately shouldnt be carried in your purse without a holster. Trigger could easily tangle on whatever is in the purse.
I wonder if they ever talked to their son about it. Hes only three, but they could've shown him what it looks like and done the "Don't touch it, it's dangerous, call us if you see it" routine, I think a three year old would understand that.
