A scene where law enforcement officials stormed Custer Elementary with guns drawn appears to have been touched off by elementary students discussing current events or something of that ilk, according to the Custer County Sheriff’s Department. Last Wednesday afternoon at around 4 p.m. a call was placed to 911 claiming there was possibly a man at Custer Elementary with a gun and knives. Law enforcement from the Custer County Sheriff’s Department, National Park Service, South Dakota Department of Game, Fish & Parks and South Dakota Highway Patrol swarmed to the school, but after several minutes on the scene and clearing the building room by room, it was determined there was no such man at the school. “We never did determine where (the rumor) came from,” Custer County Sheriff Rick Wheeler said. Sgt. Slade Heeb of the Custer County Sheriff’s Department theorizes the incident’s genesis came from a contact a deputy had with a student earlier in the day that was completely unrelated to the man with a gun call. Heeb believes that call, combined with recent events in the media involving violence at schools, generated a discussion among students that was overheard by another student walking down the hall, who reported to his teacher there was a student with a knife and drugs in his desk. Because it was around 4 p.m., past the dismissal time for the school, only 40 to 50 students were still in the facility, most of whom were participants in the YMCA’s Kid Stop program. According to Wheeler and Heeb, the Kid Stop teacher took the information to the elementary office building, but staff at the office was unavailable, so she later asked her assistant to report the information to YMCA director Rex Jorgensen. By the time Jorgensen called 911, the story had evolved to the possibility of a man having a gun and knives in the building. “That’s what we responded to,” Heeb said. “I think it took seven or eight minutes to figure out there wasn’t a threat there.”
Source :v:
