New Jersey woman died while napping in between one of three jobs
Fernandes earned a living working minimum wage jobs at three Dunkin' Donuts stores. When she died last month in the parking lot of a convenience store in Elizabeth, she had just completed an overnight shift at a shop in nearby Linden.
Friends and family, as well as people whose only knowledge of Fernandes was reading reports of her death, returned her generosity by raising about $6,000 online in the last few days to pay for her service. They took turns speaking of her Friday as Jackson's music played in the background. But despite mourners' insistence that the day be a celebration of Fernandes' life, her death prompted weeping and despair over the open casket and, later, at graveside.
Police says Fernandes died after pulling into the parking lot on her way home to Newark at about 6:30 a.m. Aug. 25 to take a nap. She fell asleep and was found dead hours later. While toxicology reports have not yet been completed, investigators believe she died after inhaling fumes, noting that a gas can had tipped over in the car's trunk. The car was turned off when police arrived.
While it turns out that she didn't die of exhaustion, as one expects from such titles, it still serves to hilight wage fairness trouble. Nobody should need three jobs to keep up. Where I live, one minimum wage job is only half of what it takes to live on bare minimum.
Yeah, minimum wage should cover the minimum you need to survive.
1. Rent
2. Electricity/Water/Utilities
3. Food that covers the food groups
4. Basic cell or landline phone service
5. Liability insurance and gas for your vehicle
I live in an area with a relatively low cost of living, and even then a minimum wage job barely covers rent and utilities.

no one should need even two jobs to survive.
two jobs working the register would be hell enough for me. But THREE?
Since her death wasn't tied to her working three jobs in any way, wouldn't this be taking advantage of her death as a tool to talking about wage inequality?

Every nation that considers itself advanced should have a minimum wage that would keep you above poverty line.

How common is it among people to sleep in their cars on parking lots?
I mean, among these that can actually go home and sleep properly.

shame we need much to argue about that anyways

I doubt it's something people keep a statistic of either way.
Could say she was so exhausted she was not thinking clearly. Also could say had she not been so damn tired she would not have went to sleep in her car and died from the gas fumes.
Her having three jobs could absolutely be relevant to her death.

You said "could" three times.

You asserted that "...her death wasn't tied to her working three jobs in any way". Jitterz offered reasonable speculation as to why that may not be true.
So we're taking speculation as fact now?
So we're taking speculation as fact now?
That is why I said could. Just in case you didn't entertain the idea. For all I know she was up for 5 days smoking crack.
So we're taking speculation as fact now?
You asserted something without evidence. It is more valid for Jitterz to speculate than for you to assert something as fact when you have no basis for that assertion.
Her jobs may or may not have been a factor in her death. Given the article, it isn't possible for someone like me to make a determination either way with any certainty.

What do you mean, she died from circumstances directly caused by her having to work 3 jobs
So we're taking speculation as fact now?

Since her death wasn't tied to her working three jobs in any way, wouldn't this be taking advantage of her death as a tool to talking about wage inequality?
and you aren't taking things as fact?
What do you mean, she died from circumstances directly caused by her having to work 3 jobs
She died from a gas can spilling over in her trunk. That's not because she worked 3 jobs.
She died from a gas can spilling over in her trunk. That's not because she worked 3 jobs.
yeah but to be fair, sleeping in ones car is very unusual to begin with, you could take the fact that she probably didn't even have time to refill for gas and has to sleep in her car as being massively over worked
she should not have even been doing either of those things and probably wouldn't have if she wasn't overworked
She died from a gas can spilling over in her trunk. That's not because she worked 3 jobs.
So Ashton Kutcher is to blame for this.
I knew it!

I really don't see the harm in highlighting the issue considering its really not that far fetched to connect the two considering her sleeping in her car was related to having 3 jobs.

hard to do that when you need to make 3x the rent in order to live somewhere

Her death was caused by you sneezing, Perfumly?
You murderer! :v:

It's only being highlighted because she died.
But her death wasn't from her 3 jobs.

People aren't supposed to have to work 3 jobs. It's an issue being highlighted because that isn't normal and workers rights are an issue these days.
Her death generated attention both in the U.S. and overseas, with some people seeing Fernandes as a symbol of the struggles of modern working life.
Again I don't see the harm in highlighting that at all.
I think you are being picky.

If I have to wait for something for a while and I'm in a car; I'll either recline back and take a nap or if I was expecting it play whatever handheld console I brought.
If I have to wait for something for a while and I'm in a car; I'll either recline back and take a nap or if I was expecting it play whatever handheld console I brought.
that's way different though, I'm guessing she did it because she felt she didn't have enough personal time, not because she was waiting for something.
of course this is PURELY speculation at this point.
Despite the actual cause the whole still highlights a lot of issues.
By the way is it common in America to keep a petrol can in your car, especially in a city? Just curious if her having an open one in the trunk is any indication of the amount of time she had during the day.
Dying in your sleep is one of the things I fear.
Dying in your sleep is one of the things I fear.
Doesn't seem a very rationa feal to me. Death in my mind is a very "if it happens, then it happens" sort of thing. If I die prematurely or unexpectedly, so what? Why should I care how or when?
