WOOD COUNTY, Wis. — A man who charged at a police officer last year while wielding a knife was sentenced to five years in prison on Thursday.
Officer Rod Krakow of Wisconsin Rapids police was responding to a disturbance in August 2010 when he encountered a suspect who refused to drop his weapon.
In the video of the incident, Krakow is seen confronting then-16-year-old Pao Khang. Loudly and clearly, Krakow gives his orders.
"Get on the ground. Drop the knife," he says. He is heard repeating the command several times.
Krakow ordered one of two other officers who arrived on the scene to use a TASER on Khang when the teen charged at Krakow, according to the criminal complaint. Krakow shot Khang twice.
Khang, who is now 18, was charged with reckless endangerment, obstructing an officer, disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property, all while using a dangerous weapon, according to the Wisconsin Rapids Tribune.
A jury found him guilty in August, and his 5-year sentence is a compromise between recommendations from the prosecutor and Khang’s defense attorney. He is not eligible for early release programs, sources said.
"Fortunately, the officer was armed and able to defend himself," Wood County Circuit Judge Greg Potter said. "What would have happened if it was a regular person who was unarmed?"
There is a DashCam video in the source.

The shooting was justified by the 21-Foot rule. A great job by the police.
Running at a cop with a knife never ends well, and this just proves that.
Wow, he went down like a sack of potatoes.
The fact that the officer only fired twice is a sign of some excellent discipline. Someone charging you with a knife is traditionally met with the entire magazine.
I can't say I feel bad for the man that was shot. But he obviously has severe mental disturbances.
I was just about to say (before i read that you said the 21 foot rule) that if you are chargin at someone with a knife, you can be stabbed from REALLY far away.
21 foot rule didn't work too well there did it?

Police are trained to shoot until the threat is eliminated AKA- when the suspect starts to fall to the ground, unlike in GTA:IV where they just keep shooting you.

The rule states that an officer cannot un-holster and fire a round when someone charges them from 21 feet. It is used for any type of melee weapons (baseball bats, golf clubs, knifes, etc)
this was the dumbest shit. He charged the guy, why the fuck? He was almost sure to be shot.
Not very smart to bring a knife to a gun fight.
Wow, he went down like a sack of potatoes.
that's generally what happens when you're shot
I gave that bitch a double tap. Bitches love double taps.
Definitely a justified shooting, his life was immediately in danger.
Really? "Hurr Ill rush at that police officer who has a gun to my head with a knife and hope he doesn't drop me"
Attempted suicide by cop?
Attempted suicide by cop?
looked like he didnt want to be dead, just angry.
Really? "Hurr Ill rush at that police officer who has a gun to my head with a knife and hope he doesn't drop me"
yeah because he was obviously thinking that he wouldn't drop him. have you ever heard of suicide by cop?
this was a classic case of attempted suicide by cop. he rushed the officer with a weapon, fully knowing that the officer would be forced to shoot him. it was his INTENTION to force the officer into shooting him.
Stupid fuck is lucky they had the brains to use a tazer.
Stupid fuck is lucky they had the brains to use a tazer.
he was shot twice and tasered after (I think. the officer does pull out a taser, but I'm not sure if he used it).
Serves him right to bringing a knife to a gunfight.

GET ON THE GROUND

Is anyone expecting this to be controversial?
that's generally what happens when you're shot
Not at pistol calibers with a charging opponent it isn't. You are poking very tiny holes in someone. Unless you hit something particularly amusing with those tiny holes, it may be a few seconds or even minutes before the guy really goes down.

There is also a massive difference between training and what actually happens in the field.
Good job by the officer though I really hate how the article is titled. It really makes it seem like this was police brutality
.

i can take twelve before my knees even bend
Is anyone expecting this to be controversial?
yes because a teen got shot by a police officer
completely justified though
oh god a someone's running at me with a KNIFE i better calmly tell him to stop and get on the ground!
that'll show him
Is anyone expecting this to be controversial?
The public see it as "Holy shit, that cop just shot someone" and think that it was unnecessary.

This is true but, I have faith in the mindset and natural reactions of officers.
Krakow shot Khang.
:v:
yes because a teen died
he survived
yes because a teen died

he's not dead
he was shot when he was 16 and now he's 18
you need to read the article

And it stopped him.
His legs were still moving at the end.
And plus the cop could've been injured if he hadn't fired.
