New HAL Exoskeleton: Brain-Controlled Full Body Suit to Be Used In Fukushima Cleanup
53 replies, posted
Japanese company Cyberdyne announced today an improved version of HAL (Hybrid Assistive Limb), the exoskeleton which we wrote about almost two years ago, when a tech journalist took a few steps at CES 2011 wearing the brain-controlled cyber-trousers.
The latest version of HAL has remained brain-controlled but evolved to a full body robot suit that protects against heavy radiation without feeling the weight of the suit. Eventually it could be used by workers dismantling the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant.
First thing I thought of.
Heh, the company is called Cyberdyne.
brain-controlled cyber-trousers
This is simultaneously the dumbest and the most genius thing I've ever heard of
Wait, is that company seriously called Cyberdyne? Awesome.
I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.
rustle up some power loaders please

wallace and gromit did it first, though I guess with a rather more oldschool interface

*EDIT*
Ninja'd, knew it was going to happen.

That thing looks awesome, its great to hear about progression on the exoskeleton front, I have never heard of one that is ready to be used in the field yet.

Very cool.
Looks similar to the one DARPA is developing.
Was expecting something like a power armor/crazy stuff like that because of the way the title was worded.
Cool nevertheless.
They really shouldn't have named it HAL.
If only it looked like megaman costume, that would have made it cooler looking
Next logical step: MJOLNIR armor
I knew Japan would come up with a good way to clean the disaster up, happy for them. This looks really cool.
Next logical step: MJOLNIR armor
Kinda got a super long way to go, keep in mind that the Mjolnir armour was so powerful that it would break the bones of non spartans every time they moved.
Cyberdyne... HAL... Something tells me they're working with a shtick.
Still yet, cool stuff. Very neat applications for the handicapped, too, if it really is brain-controlled.

We've come a long way since our first attempt at a powered exoskeleton :v:
Will it dream?
I'm really excited fro this technology. After a few years of production and smaller units are made, it will be a good way to give invalids a life again, until we can just go in and rewire their brains.
We are SO SO close to living in the classic vision of the future

Funny that... That thing would literally crush the occupant if power failed.

Of electric sheep.
Unfortunately since this technology exists for civil purposes I must also assume there is war machine exoskeletons in production/use already
GOSH, that's cool. Seeing this kind of tech progress always gets me riled up. I mean, the inevitability of armed military exoskeletons is frightening and unpleasant to consider, but at the same time: "Sweet! Power armor!"

uh
no
Well, not quite exoskeletons, but DARPA pioneered a tension-based mobility enhancement system in the late 70s. It's likely that covert and spec-ops forces use it today.

why would you even use exoskeletons at this point for anything other than heavy lifting? they're impractically bulky, they require you to carry around a big-ass power source if you want to do anything you would actually do in a military operation, a costly redesign would be necessary to properly incorporate them in 99% of modern militaries, and they'd be super expensive for little extra actual function. sure, you can carry more stuff, but that's hardly a task exclusive to the army.
ultimately, trying to field this stuff for anything other than what it's been designed for would be overly expensive and largely useless

For the time being, yeah, totally. But give it five to ten more years of development and we'll likely be seeing the grandbabies of this tech deployed as indoor tanks. I feel like total nerd, but:

The most difficult hurdles of technology like this are power supplies/generation, operator-armor interfacing, and exoskeletal mobility. Once you have the base technology nailed, putting armor and weaponry on it presents minimal challenge.

The interfacing wouldn't be too difficult even in a year or two, we just recently managed to take control of someones hand, and make it move using signals from someone elses brain.

The power supply, could honestly probably run off a small petrol or diesel engine just now, it would probably be pretty shit though and one half decent hit from an explosive would set the whole thing on fire.

Could use a nuclear battery array for power, quite honestly.
I can imagine exosuits would be useful for fielding portable mortars and the like. A more mobile gun platform that can be operated by an individual rather than a crew of 3.
Feh. Wake me up when they develop this:
