Last night, the people from 18 states on Brazil suffered from the greatest fear on humanity- the fear of the darkness. At exactly 10:13PM according to Brazilia time, all the eletric power from those states went out- and they were only recovered on 00:00 (although some other places suffered another blackout on 00:33).
The population went "mad"- cars started to hit trees, people had to be evacuated from subways and aglomerations were formed in bus stops and over 15 people were robbed in the darkness- not counting that some people lost their eletronics because they "lost power" (couldn't find the right translation)
The Brazillian government said that the blackout occured because of "bad weather" where some of the eletric towers (again, couldn't find the right translation) that powered the cities were hit by lightning, wind and rain.

I just posted this here because I find it an interesting topic- considering that no insurance covers "things destroyed by nature", it's pretty suspicious that the government is saying that "bad weather" caused the blackout- And I can tell you, it was pretty bad. 2 people were robbed right in front of my house.
We had to sleep in really hot conditions- there was no air conditioner, so almost my whole family got sick and stayed today at home.
If anything is wrong in my translation, tell me and I'll fix it.
Why do people crash their cars in blackouts?
Use your headlights morons.

No light, people are crazy, trying to get to their homes. It could be an accident.
It was already 10 PM, if you didn't have your headlights on already, you're a dumbass and should have your liscense suspended.

Yeah I wondered that as well, they don't regularly switch their lights on when it gets dark? :P
That's like all but 32 states.
:smug:

Pylons? I think thats the word. Thanks.
Also, the guy who crashed his car said that there were traffic lights (still don't know the translation to that) on green, so he got confused and crashed.

White are the states not affected by the blackout.
Grey are the states who were "partially" affected by the blackout.
And black are the states TOTALLY affected by the blackout.
I live in SP, Sao Paulo, and it was dark as hell here.
Santos during the blackout:

The people of Brazil sound like idiots. OH GOD THE LIGHTS WENT OUT QUICK WE MUST RUSH BACK TO OUR HOUSES AND DISREGARD THINGS LIKE HEADLIGHTS AND ROADSIGNS AND CRASH INTO TREES

It's not just Brazil. The blackout in '03 (in the Northeast US) had the same effects. People freak out, get distracted, want to know what's going on, etc. It isn't that people aren't using their headlights it's that people take their eyes off the road to see what's happening.
