http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/05/25/rhodeisland.immigration/index.html?hpt=T1
(CNN) -- Days after a boisterous protest on Rhode Island's House floor, a state official decided that a bill copying Arizona's immigration law will not be heard by lawmakers this session. House Speaker Gordon Fox has decided not to take up the bill, a spokesman said Tuesday, because the speaker believes immigration matters are best handled at the federal level. The move effectively kills the bill, which -- like a recently passed Arizona law -- would have allowed police to check people for proof of legal U.S. residency. The State House became the latest battleground in the nation's racially charged immigration debate. On Thursday, about 100 demonstrators chanted slogans and called on the bill's sponsor, Democratic State Rep. Peter Palumbo, to resign. Critics say the Arizona law will lead to racial profiling, while supporters say it involves no racial profiling and is needed to crack down on increasing crime involving illegal immigrants. Police are allowed to check a person's residency status only if the person has been stopped or arrested for another reason.
you show them, Rhode Island
Was a good bill.
Hell yeah, Rhode Island's leading the charge!
Perhaps facepunch would support this bill if it also let Rhode Island kick out smokers
Why would Rhode Island need any immigration laws at state level anyways? Who the hell want's to illegally immigrate to Rhode Island?
Perhaps facepunch would support this bill if it also let Rhode Island kick out smokers
Oh yeah, Facepunch would support it 100%
Or fat people.
Or everyone who isn't on facepunch.
Why would Rhode Island need any immigration laws at state level anyways? Who the hell want's to illegally immigrate to Rhode Island?
Rhode Island has a lot of Welfare programs.
And renamed the state Garryland.
Why would Rhode Island need any immigration laws at state level anyways? Who the hell want's to illegally immigrate to Rhode Island?
Don't underestimate those illegal canadians. :canada:
something like 70% of the US agrees with the bill, isn't surprising others are taking up on az's courageousness
something like 70% of the US agrees with the bill
shows how xenophobic and idiotic people are
Why would Rhode Island need any immigration laws at state level anyways? Who the hell want's to illegally immigrate to Rhode Island?
There's illegal immigrants I would guess in every single state in the nation. Just a few days ago, I was reading about illegal immigration in my state, New Jersey. And no one even likes New Jersey. Yet they immigrate there :v:
So it's idiotic to enforce federal law? Even with a state law copying it? You got to remember, we never would of had this mess if the Federal Government was doing its job.
something like 70% of the US agrees with the bill, isn't surprising others are taking up on az's courageousness
Plenty of people throughout history have agreed with some really terrible things. That's why the majority isn't the only thing required to create lasting laws.
So it's idiotic to enforce federal law? Even with a state law copying it? You got to remember, we never would of had this mess if the Federal Government was doing its job.
Federal law is different than the original Arizona bill. Oh, hi glaber
that's my state :3
shows how xenophobic and idiotic people are
We're idiotic for wanting people to come in legally, and push out those who have broken the law?
We're idiotic for wanting people to come in legally, and push out those who have broken the law?
While simultaneously harassing citizens that happen to not have their ID on them. Except that won't happen except for mexican-looking Americans.
We're idiotic for wanting people to come in legally, and push out those who have broken the law?
I think it's the proposed methods of doing so that are in question, but you knew that. Come on. You're doing that strawman thing.
We're idiotic for wanting people to come in legally, and push out those who have broken the law?
yeah, because I said that. and it's idiotic just to kick out all the illegals. the US economy depends on them. make it easier for them to gain citizenship and DON'T just deport all illegals.
While simultaneously harassing citizens that happen to not have their ID on them. Except that won't happen except for mexican-looking Americans.
No where in the Arizona law does it say anything about "mexican" or "mexican looking".
yeah, because I said that. and it's idiotic just to kick out all the illegals. the US economy depends on them. make it easier for them to gain citizenship and DON'T just deport all illegals.
You grossly over estimate the "dependency" we have on illegals. And even besides that, it's the LAW that they have broken. Do we stop the imprisonment of a murderer just because he has a job?
No where in the Arizona law does it say anything about "mexican" or "mexican looking".
Because it's the law that enforces itself, and not people with biases, right?
Federal law is different than the original Arizona bill. Oh, hi glaber
Hello Zeke. So how do they differ? [editline]06:27PM[/editline]
While simultaneously harassing citizens that happen to not have their ID on them. Except that won't happen except for mexican-looking Americans.
Aren't you suppose to have your driver's license with you anyway? (Or if you don't drive, a State ID)
No where in the Arizona law does it say anything about "mexican" or "mexican looking".
do you honestly think a police officer is going to ask a caucasian if he's a citizen and ask him for his documents? you're ignorant if you think race isn't a factor in this
You grossly over estimate the "dependency" we have on illegals.
not really
And even besides that, it's the LAW that they have broken.
it's a non violent crime broheim
Do we stop the imprisonment of a murderer just because he has a job?
lol, comparing illegal immigrants to murderers? [editline]06:29PM[/editline]
Aren't you suppose to have your driver's license with you anyway? (Or if you don't drive, a State ID)
only if you're operating a vehicle
Aren't you suppose to have your driver's license with you anyway? (Or if you don't drive, a State ID)
I'm not sure of the exact law in Arizona in this regard, but the US Supreme Court has held that there is no requirement to prove who you are unless arrested, and then you need only state your name upon arrest. You cannot be held for not possessing your ID at a particular time, although you can be required to provide ID where safety is an issue (e.g. a driver's license when you had been driving). Typically, you must provide the ID within 24 hours.
do you honestly think a police officer is going to ask a caucasian if he's a citizen and ask him for his documents? you're ignorant if you think race isn't a factor in this
Sorry, I forgot every single police officer in the US is racist if he's arresting a minority.
not really
Source?
it's a non violent crime broheim
A crime is STILL a CRIME.
lol, comparing illegal immigrants to murderers?
lol, not giving an counter argument?
Sorry, I forgot every single police officer in the US is racist if he's arresting a minority.
Not all police officers, or even a majority of them, have to be racist for it to be a problem. Even officers not considered racist can have a bias against particular races without being aware of this bias. [editline]06:38PM[/editline]
A crime is STILL a CRIME.
But not all crimes are worthy of harming someone's life over. Also, what dangers do immigrants pose that makes such immigration illegal in the first place?
Sorry, I forgot every single police officer in the US is racist if he's arresting a minority.
you failed to answer my question and it's subconscious do you really think a police officer is going to see a caucasian and think, "hmm, he might be an illegal."
Source?
http://www.aila.org/content/fileviewer.aspx?docid=9284&linkid=39282
A crime is STILL a CRIME.
uh, there are different DEGREES of crime. speeding is a crime. gay marriage is a crime in 44/50 states. what's your point? these are non violent crimes. don't compare them to murder.
lol, not giving an counter argument?
you made a terrible analogy. murder = violent crime that violates someone else's rights illegal immigration = non violent crime
