Ciarán Maxwell, 30, from Larne, was detained in Somerset by officers from the Metropolitan Police Service's Counter Terrorism Command on Wednesday. The arrest is understood to be connected to the discovery of two arms dumps near Larne earlier this year. These finds were thought to be linked to dissident republican paramilitaries. It has emerged that Mr Maxwell was the victim of a sectarian attack in 2002, when he was 16, and suffered a fractured skull.
Hate begets hate begets hate Quite rare for an armed forces guy to be involved in terrorism. Looks like some assholes attacked him years ago and he's harboured a grudge since luckily he was caught before doing anything, hopefully he'll help police find the rest of the weapons. Further sources with more info on the caches found http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/northern-ireland/arrested-royal-marine-ciaran-maxwell-beaten-by-larne-loyalists-in-2002-34996024.html
Maxwell is being detained on suspicion of preparation for acts of terrorism. While the threat posed by violent dissident republicans in Northern Ireland has been classified as severe for a number of years, in May the UK intelligence services raised the threat level in Great Britain from moderate to substantial. Two separate hauls of weapons were discovered in Carnfunnock and Capanagh parks within three months of each other. An armour-piercing improvised rocket and two anti-personnel mines were among the cache recovered at Capanagh in May. Several pipe bombs, magazines and ammunition for an assault rifle as well as bomb component parts and command wires were also concealed in barrels in purpose-built holes in woodland. In March, bomb-making items were found at nearby Carnfunnock Country Park. Police said four barrels were unearthed at Carnfunnock - two barrels were empty but two contained a variety of bomb-making components, including wiring, toggle switches, circuit boards, partially constructed timer power units, ball bearings and a small quantity of explosives. The last thing Europe needs right now is another IRA to be sparked.

I'm glad he was caught before he did any damage. There are tensions, after all, especially since Northern Ireland voted to stay in the EU but are being forced to leave. The border situation is a mess and I hope that Europe are smart enough to recognise we need to have an open border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
