Harley Davies, 17, was set on by a gang of youths who shouted an obsenity at him and told him to go and get his hair cut. The A-level student was left with a fractured jaw and broken tooth during the lunchtime attack on the Blackburn College campus. Campaigner Sylvia Lancaster, whose daughter Sophie was killed for the way she looked, said the incident should be classed as a hate crime. Harley’s dad Alan, of Moor Lane, Darwen, said: “Harley had being doing some homework over lunch and was walking on his own when this gang targeted him. “They picked on him simply because of the way he looked. “My son is a very laid-back lad. He is not a fighter and he does have a long-hair ‘hippy’ look about him. That’s his choice. “He was singled out because of this by three members of this group who repeatedly shouted at him to get his hair cut. "When he finally told them to get lost he was punched in the face by one of the youths and fell to the floor. “He was kicked on the ground and went into the foetal position to protect himself. “It only stopped when a member of college staff dragged one of the boys off him and they all ran away. “He’s told me it was a frightening experience. He is completely harmless.” An ambulance was called around 12.30pm on Tuesday and Harley was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital. He spent three hours receiving treatment for his facial injuries. Former Darwen Vale pupil Harley is in his second year at the college studying English language, literature and media. The member of college staff told police she did not recognise the attackers as college students. Police confirmed that the college CCTV camera which covered the incident was not working, but said they had other CCTV in the area which was forming part of their inquiries. They are not classing the incident as a hate crime. The three men are described as Asian and aged between 16 and 19 years old. A police spokesman said: “This was a nasty and unprovoked assault and I would like to reassure people that a though investigation is under way.” Mrs Lancaster said: “They have singled this boy out and attacked him because something in his appearnce sets him apart. "That is a hate crime and I hope when the police investigate it they see sense and class it as such. “It was the same with Sophie and it is not good enough. They deserve protection under law.” Barry Griffiths, head of learner services at Blackburn College, said: “Harley Davies was assaulted on a public thoroughfare on campus in an unpleasant and unacceptable incident. “The college security team are currently working with the police to find the offenders, and are in full dialogue with the student and his family. We hope to see Harley back in college next week. “In terms of any violent behaviour, it is something we absolutely do not accept. "We know, from a recent external study, that 97 per cent of our students feel the college is a safe place to learn, and we will do everything within our power to ensure this.” Anyone with information should contact police on 0845 1253545 or anonymously on Crimestoppers 0800 555111.
Source: http://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/news/9293598.Blackburn_College_student_beaten_up_by_gang_over_his_long_hair/?ref=mr
that's fucked up
So many cunts in the world, I don't see the point to pick on someone with long hair or anything. But this is just mindless behaviour from those people.
He's different let's beat him! [editline]3rd October 2012[/editline] No wonder there's war in the world.
He's different let's beat him! [editline]3rd October 2012[/editline] No wonder there's war in the world.
ahaha ahahahaha ahahahahahaha yeah some kids picking n a guy over long hair is equal to mass murder you're right
I remember when I had long hair.. I will never grow my hair long again.
ahaha ahahahaha ahahahahahaha yeah some kids picking n a guy over long hair is equal to mass murder you're right
There are plenty of mass murders for equally ridiculous reasons
ahaha ahahahaha ahahahahahaha yeah some kids picking n a guy over long hair is equal to mass murder you're right
uh this isnt about killing people you realise
Can't say this is any different for the ol' city of blackburn. You can barely take 2 steps before stepping into some grubby area.
Found this in the comment section:
Speaking as Harley's father, I really don't want this debate to degenerate into ethnic slurs. I personally believe this was either a hate or racially motivated crime - in my opinion, the two should be seen equally in the eyes of the law. Anyway, this is a matter for the police and (hopefully) courts to decide. What neither my son nor myself want to see is tensions raised within the community. An eye for an eye leaves everyone blind, doesn't it? My son has recieved a lot of messages of support from his college friends (both white and asian) - and he won't be cutting his hair anytime soon he says! These louts may have been Asian, but I honestly don't believe they are in any way representative of the Blackburn Asian community... they are a minority and a disgrace to their families.

Harley here, just wanted to set the story straight a bit. My dad's name is in fact Alistair, not Alan. Also college didn't phone an ambulance but they did phone a taxi which was charged to college, I would also have been able to charge a taxi to college back to home if my father hadn't of come to the hospital to check on me. I'm feeling fine and I'm still my usual smiley laughing self, thanks very much for the support that has been given. I also want to stress my fathers point of this not degenerating into a racial debate, yes the attack was possibly racially motiviated and definitely a hate crime, but in the end of the day it's a small minority of the Asian community that do these kind of things. One of my friends was beaten by a larger group of white lads in Darwen a few months ago just because they were stomping on someone's head while they were on the floor and he tried to split it up. These are the kind of youths that give their ethnical group and age group a bad name. Peace and love. -Harley
Shit like that makes me cringe hard. I had the luck of having good friends around me and being able to handle myself in fights, but we've had a couple of suicides over bullying. But I guess that's supposed to be part of growing up. I kind of miss school, actually. I mean, what challenges does Adult life have that don't revolve around taxes, paper work, dealing with people sneakily trying to trick you behind your back. I feel like I should have taken it more for what it was worth
he does need a haircut...
How is a 17 year old already in college?
Such is the life in England.
Wait isn't this old? This is from last year.
How is a 17 year old already in college?
I was 16 when I started. You finish secondary school at that age in the UK and you can just go straight into college from there.
How is a 17 year old already in college?
I'm a year younger and I just started college, you can be 15 and 16 to get into college here in the UK.
How is a 17 year old already in college?
College has a different meaning in the UK, we have community colleges and sixth form colleges which can then lead on to university (which is the equivalent of US College)
How is a 17 year old already in college?
College and uni are difference in uk
College has a different meaning in the UK, we have community colleges and sixth form colleges which can then lead on to university (which is the equivalent of US College)
oh lol. Its funny because my brother is going to be 21 when he gets into university. I heard you guys only go up to grade 11 there as well.
How is a 17 year old already in college?
How do you manage to not know this? I really don't understand.
oh lol. Its funny because my brother is going to be 21 when he gets into university. I heard you guys only go up to grade 11 there as well.
We start school at around age 5, then we leave compulsory education at 16. Then its to college (unless ou get a job or something) for two years then to university (college). MY brain hurts whenever I see someone try to equate the american and british school system directly, and that includes me.
oh lol. Its funny because my brother is going to be 21 when he gets into university. I heard you guys only go up to grade 11 there as well.
We go from Year 0 (Reception) all the way Year 13 now.
We go from Year 0 (Reception) all the way Year 13 now.
that's weird
that's weird
And it's all key stages, so Reception is just like the pre-school Key Stage 1 is years 1 and 2 Key Stage 2 is years 3 to 6 Key Stage 3 is years 7 to 9 Key Stage 4 is years 10 and 11 Then you go to College/Sixth form for 2 years. Then university.
ahaha ahahahaha ahahahahahaha yeah some kids picking n a guy over long hair is equal to mass murder you're right
I see you're new here.
The compulsory education age is going up to 18 at some point in the future, not sure when exactly.
The people in their last year of secondary school now are staying onto 18 I think.
The compulsory education age is going up to 18 at some point in the future, not sure when exactly.
It is now, I'm in the last compulsory lower sixth year.
