Football championship match discovered to be rigged
-The fixed Champions League tie in England took place in the "last three or four years";
-The identity of that match cannot be revealed due to "ongoing judicial proceedings";
-Other "corrupt" matches included World Cup and European Championship qualifiers and "several top football matches in European leagues";
-In Germany-based matches alone, criminals wagered £13.8m (16m euros) on rigged matches and made £6.9m in profits. Officials fear this is as the "tip of the iceberg";
-In total 380 suspicious matches were in Europe and a further 300 in Africa, Asia and south and central America.

I'm learning from smurfy
A+ Title.
Also quote dat shit mang.
The implications of this are i dare say much more massive than rigging the superbowl.
its quite obviously the Chelsea vs Barca from 2008.
They had 4 blatant penalty's denied losing them the match, resulting in this:

I nearly shit my pants.
Was the title changed or something? I'm not sure how you could think this was the Super Bowl

jeez FP stop being so american-centric
Was the title changed or something? I'm not sure how you could think this was the Super Bowl
No it's just that people think football = handegg
Anybody mentions superbowl again or american football im gonna get pissed
fake edit: can you stop taking me so seriously
I guess this isn't to hard to believe seeing as it's the most popular sport in the world and no doubt somewhere out there people are making lot's of money from these rigged games.

Title is 'Football championship match discovered to be rigged'.
"The Super Bowl is the annual championship game of the National Football League (NFL)..."
Not an impossible thing to think, but a bit of a stretch all the same. You'd think if it were the Super Bowl it would just say it in the title.
American football. Getting pissed?
It's a reasonable thing to get mixed up with, especially if you're American since that's what we call it over here. It's great that you guys (as well as many other nations) reserve that word for a different sport but you really are being very childish by getting so angered when someone makes as reasonable a mistake as that.
I can just imagine Howard Webb being involved in this somehow, Hope he is. hate that man with a passion.
No it's just that people think football = handegg
I could have sworn gridiron was the only other name for it, and people called it handegg as more of a joke than anything.
Anybody mentions superbowl again or american football im gonna get pissed
I'd be pretty pissed if the superbowl was rigged too.
Why did handegg have to be called football. I'm serious does anyone know why?
Does this include that one where the ball clearly passed the line

I didn't know it had another name

Handegg is a silly joke. If you really want to name it after the body parts used to play it mostly it would be better to call it Armball. If your eggs look like an American football then something is wrong and you probably shouldn't eat it.
Why did handegg have to be called football. I'm serious does anyone know why?
If you don't like that name, like I said it's also called gridiron. Handegg just sounds dumb and no one in their right mind would actually call it that seriously.
It'd be like me calling football 'footsy' or 'kickers'.

Technically it's all football because you use your foot to score a goal (field goal kick). It's just that in American football, the rules have been altered to the point where it doesn't resemble association football at all. I don't know the history of sports but I wouldn't be surprised if American football evolved from association football which evolved from some other sport that used a ball and a large field with two goals.
So really it's just a stupid thing to fight over.

I don't see anybody mixing up football with American football in the NFL related threads.

Perhaps that's because of team references, player names, more European posters in those threads, any number of things. Here at least the title was ambiguous.
Either way, it's not that big a deal.
What is a huge deal is the fact that Football as we know it has been the victim of a massive rigging scandal that is going to be felt for a long time.
I mean, Jesus, 680 games.
Chances are, we all watched a few of those rigged games.
Considering it's the biggest sport in the world, its not surprising.
football rigging is nothing new. anyone remember Juventus rigged matches 6 or 7 years ago? they ended up being stripped of titles and getting relegated.
not that im saying it's acceptable. it has no place in football. but it's been around for a long time. this is nothing new really
Hey guys I thought I'd leave this here.
