• Erdoğan accuses Germany of 'Nazi practices' over blocked political rallies
The Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has lashed out at Germany for blocking several rallies on its soil in the run-up to a referendum in Turkey, likening its stance to Nazi practices. “Your practices are not different from the Nazi practices of the past,” he said of Germany at a women’s rally in Istanbul before the referendum on changes to the constitution that would bolster his powers as president. “I thought it’s been a long time since Germany left [Nazi practices]. We are mistaken,” he added. Last week federal authorities in two German states withdrew permission for political rallies targeted at Turkish residents in Germany amid growing public outrage over Ankara’s arrest of a Turkish-German journalist. “Germany, which has never escaped its Nazi past, has let slip its mask,” the Takvim newspaper wrote at the time. “It has shown once again that it is no friend and ally.” Another newspaper, Akşam, ran a photomontage on its front page showing the German chancellor with a toothbrush moustache, along with the words “Heil Hitler”. Similar photomontages have appeared in Greek and Polish newspapers in the past, but for a head of state to use the same rhetoric is almost without precedent. In 2013 Hungary’s prime minister, Viktor Orbán, compared Merkel’s policy towards his country to 1944 Nazi occupation, stating in a radio interview that “the Germans have already sent cavalry to Hungary – they came in the form of tanks … It didn’t work out.”
Source: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/mar/05/erdogan-accuses-germany-of-nazi-practices-over-blocked-election-rallies
The irony meter just had a fucking seizure, and is now producing foam from every orifice while shaking on the floor.
referendum on changes to the constitution that would bolster his powers as president
Who's calling who a Nazi now?
Erdogan's numbers aren't looking that good at the homefront, so he is counting on Turkish people in Germany with dual citizenship to make the cut for him when they vote. I admit, Germany is pretty sensitive when it comes to its past but you won't guilt trip us into allowing your propaganda here, just to turn Turkey into a complete dictatorship. Literally fuck off
I always got the impression that German went well out of it's way to escape it's Nazi past. Then again, I wouldn't trust Gollum to make Nazi/Hitler allusions in any case.
Yeah, we're getting that stuff over here in the Netherlands too. Some minister of foreign affairs will apparently be showing up to hold rallies for this. We're not as explicit about it, though. We just have politicians saying 'yeah, we'd rather you kept that shit in your own country, if that's okay'.
always remember, the armenian genocide never happened and they deserved it anyway

The cities are trying to get the federal government to handle it through official foreign policy though, which I mostly agree with because the current implementation is definitely messy. At least that's as of yesterday. The issue is developing pretty quickly.
It'll be absolutely fantastic news if 'no' wins the referendum, but it's unlikely when the government is saying anyone who does is a terrorist sympathiser. Shit is bananas.
Event horizon calling the kettle black.
always remember, the armenian genocide never happened and they deserved it anyway
Legit. Fuck Turks (or anyone) who deny it.
I've never seen something like this: A foreign politician visiting to get votes from dual-citizenship people to settle matters back in his country. I dunno what's more messed up: The above or that Turkish-Germans supposedly support the empowerment of a to-be dictator more than the people actually living in Turkey. This kinda scumming shouldn't be encouraged and should be accordingly dealt with via legislation, especially because it's done with the goal of undermining the agency of the people most directly affected.
