Dina Kourda, on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, has requested that the city of Irvine, California build a sign to memorialize the hundreds of fish killed in a traffic crash on Oct. 11 while they were being taken to the Irvine Ranch Market.
A truck was carrying 1,600 pounds of live fish and tanks of pure oxygen, when it crashed with two other vehicles, overturned, and caused hundreds of pounds of fish to shut down an Irvine intersection at Walnut and Yale avenues.
The oxygen was used to keep saltwater bass alive as the fish were being taken to market, reports the Orange County Register.
According to the letter, provided by PETA, the sign would read: "In memory of hundreds of fish who suffered and died at this spot."
The letter added: "Although such signs are traditionally reserved for human fatalities, I hope you'll make an exception because of the enormous suffering involved in this case."
"Research tells us that fish use tools, tell time, sing, and have impressive long-term memories and complex social structures, yet fish used for food are routinely crushed, impaled, cut open, and gutted, all while still conscious. Sparing them from being tossed from a speeding truck and slowly dying from injuries and suffocation seems the least that we can do."
Yup that's PETA alright.
"excuse me, do you know where 'nemo street' is?"
finding nemo
That last paragraph makes this sound like extreme satire.
Slippery Dick Street
I would like to see the science that bass have the same intellect as a whale or dolphin
Wait.. so like, do they literally want the street to be like "Dead Fish St." because I mean the fish probably don't have a name.
I feel they just want a comemorative sign of a bunch of dead fish. At least that's what the article seems to imply, I don't see any reference to a name change.
The striped bass (Morone saxatilis), also called Atlantic striped bass, striper, linesider, rock, pimpfish, or rockfish)
Pimpfish Street. DO IT.
Alright, I am all for treating animals in a proper manner in which does not mean that they are abused; But come on.. this is just bloody ridiculous. Even in regards to it being PETA.
Read the title, thought it was a truckload of tropical fish that died and was devastated.
Realized that they were sea-bass.
No longer devastated.
Seriously, sea-bass are delicious and friggin' everywhere up in Oregon. We wanted something OTHER than sea-bass and when we went deep-sea fishing that's all we caught. The limit on those guys is so high and there are so many of them that we actually maxed out after less than four hours.
PETA what are you doing

let's not forget how PETA 'waged a war' on Pokemon due to 'virtual animal cruelty', and on Super Mario Bros., for fuck's sake
To hell with that, I'm more concerned about the huge waste of money and food this was, over a thousand fish that were heading to market, presumably meaning they were going to die and be served as food, die in transit, spoiling the meat and making them useless, that's got to be a few thousand dollars of fish meat that got spoiled. Not to mention all the families these didn't get to feed. These fish were going to die anyways, they just died too soon, and that resulted in a huge waste of their meat, and therefore a huge waste of money and food.
What would PETA have done had these fish made it to market, demanded the market put up a plaque in memory of all the fish that were sold off as food there?

Pretty sure we don't eat dolphins
and dolphins aren't even fish
Although suffocating hurts like a bitch, and I'm pretty sure those fish went through a lot of pain, they where going to be killed anyway. There is no fucking need for a memorial.
Well if the street has no name then I don't see a problem with naming it after a dead fish.
Dead fish street, sounds.. okay.

They're not talking about dolphins. The last paragraph is indeed correct, though not for all species of fish. There are some species that use tools.
PETA is still a useless organization, though.
[editline]30th October 2012[/editline]
And some cultures do eat dolphin.
peta as fuck
Were those bass ill tempered?
Bastard Street.
why dont they want streets named after all the animals theyve killed
