There's been an increase of newbies here and I've decided to make a help section so people that know what they're doing can help them.
I'm going to start this thread off with some tricks you may not know. I'm gathering information and posting them from other websites and information I already know.
[highlight] Tricks [/highlight]
[b] Brush Scaling [/b]
You may not know this but you can scale brushes in mspaint.
All you have to do is hold down control while pressing the plus key which will make the brushes bigger or you could press the minus key to make them smaller.
It works for all tools used for drawing ( for box tool and other shape tools it increases the border ).
[b] Image Scaling [/b]
If you want to correctly scale your image without it being fat or long there's a simple way to do that. You just need to do the same thing as if you were scaling a brush, make sure what you want scaled is selected with the box tool.
[b] Border Replacement [/b]
If you decide to change the border color of something you've made or any color instead of going over it again there's an easier way. All you have to do is select the eraser tool, then make the primary color the color you want to replace. Then make the secondary color the color you want to replace it with. Then just right click and swab over the border and there, a brand new border color.
[b] Mspaint Grid [/b]
Here's something you most likely wouldn't know. There's a grid inside mspaint activated only by hotkeys. When you're zoomed in by X6 or X8 press control then G. Never knew that? Well now you do.
[b] 3rd Color for the Palette [/b]
You know you have the primary color, the secondary color, but what about a 3rd?
You can have a third one, really found useful and I doubt a lot of you know about this.
If you ctrl + click a color you can have a third color. In order to use it just hit ctrl then draw.
[highlight] Other Information [/highlight]
- Always save as PNG, it reduces file size.
- In order for people to see your image, upload it at cubeupload.com and post the url around image tags.
Example: [img]url[/img]
[b] Other programs [/b]
Don't want to use mspaint, there's other programs you can use which are like it but perhaps better in ways. I use good ol' mspaint but here's some if you don't like using it.

[url]http://www.gimp.org/[/url] GIMP

[highlight] PICTURE WARS [/highlight]
"There's all this threads about Picture Wars and I would like to play one but don't know how!"
If that's you, you've come to the right place.
Picture Wars takes a bit of time but is incredibly fun to play and watch.

BACKUP ( USE THIS ONE, ORIGINAL IS DOWN ):
[url]http://picturewars.freeforums.org/index.php[/url]
First, if you're new to this I suggest you watch a few matches and read this:
[url]http://picturewars.freeforums.org/introduction-for-newbies-read-this-t69.html[/url]
Once you know how to play, I suggest you make an army which will most likely look like shit but don't
start to play right away because you will most likely get kicked out of the match you want to join. Improve and ask for help on this thread and once your finished your first army, unless it's so good ( We can decide ) scrap it. Then make another one and shade it.
[HIGHLIGHT] NOTE: DO NOT TAKE OR EDIT ANOTHER PERSON'S ARMY WITHOUT PERMISSION, YOU WILL BE SEVERELY HATED BY FP IF YOU DO SO. [/highlight]
Some Good Army Examples:
[url]http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=819195[/url]
[url]http://picturewars.freeforums.org/armies-f9.html[/url]
"SHADE? OMFG BBQFEST"
No need to worry! If you don't know how to shade at all look at other people's armies and there are tutorials you can find via Google.
[b] Terms [/b]
Declare - Announcing that you are editing the image
Stack Declaring - Declaring after another person " Declare after binkow " meaning you will edit once he's done, usually allowed in matches.
Double Declaring - Declaring when you declared last
Turn Based - If for some reason you don't know what this means, it means that instead of the declare order you will go in a specific order. ( Used in 1 V 1 but could be in other )
If you use IE to copy the images, they will become darker every time you do. You have to use FF for it as it doesn't alter the it. If you use IE people will notice and you'll most likely get kicked out, so download FF.

[highlight]Have a question or need help with your spriting? Post it here. [/highlight]
Also to the veterans out there, if you want anything to add to the OP just post.
+1 informative
hopefully newbies will read
Very helpful and informative, I did not know about the Border Replacement and I know that i'm going to use that function alot now :)
I would also recommend the site [url]http://www.imageshack.us[/url] for uploading files, so far it have never gone down for me.
Perhaps we should make our own guides on how to shade and other techniques used while MS painting? :)
I also think this thread should be stickied!
Have another informative binkow, hope newcomers will read this.
I never knew about the third colour, that's pretty cool.
You can also get the grid by pressing View> Zoom > Show Grid. You have to be zoomed in though, and there's no real reason to use that instead of Ctrl G.
There's also a way to zoom in further than 800 percent, there's a tiny line under 8x option that does it.

I thought "that has to be the biggest lie ever", opened paint and clicked it. What did I see, 10x zoom :D
Never knew about the grid or border replacement! Those will be infinitely useful!
This is useful. This thread should be stickies
-Snip-
post pictures of sticky notes and glue, we will make it sticky by ourselves!
but yeah this taught me some stuff ;3
Glad people found this helpful.
So half of your post is tricks and general MS Paint help while the other half is entirely dedicated to PW? As much as I like how much effort you put into your post you need to reach a broader area of MS Paint users otherwise I really wouldn't find this thread worthy of a sticky. I'm sure Plutonia could contribute a few of his "plutorials" and I know Ausare has a pretty rad tutorial on how to construct a head. Search around this forum, go back some pages, there's some pretty great stuff in this forum.

I couldn't agree more.
Guide I made for CYOA's:
[highlight]CYOA[/highlight]
"Chose Your Own Adventure" is just as popular, well maybe not here, as Picture Wars for mspaint fun. Though many of the threads I've seen in this section seem to do terrible after the thread start. So I made a little guide on how to prepare for/creating one.
[b]1. Make up the plot/setting/characters/etc for the stories adventure.[/b] -You can't just "make it up as you go along" because either it will have some dumb ending made up in a rush or people will think its dumb and stop caring for it.
[b]2. Map out all the areas[/b] -It may take awhile but now that you did the maps in advance now all you need to do when you start it is draw what the people want, meaning faster updates, thread won't die.
[b]3. Starting the adventure.[/b] -Mostly all CYOA stories start out with the screen black and the main character waking up with amnesia, it's perfectly fine to do, but originality is always nice.
[b]4. Have fun.[/b] -Choose post decisions that make the adventure be the most entertaining, maybe even ones that change what you originally planned on happening.
artistic note: it's easier to make it a side-scroller (2) than a first person perspective, THOUGH if it's a short CYOA than it's fine.
[QUOTE=emPiRe14;18693923]
artistic note: don't make the adventure in a first person view, it takes way longer than just a side-scrolling one.[/QUOTE]
Yeah but it's alot more fun :buddy:
BASIC SHADING TUTORIAL
objects and light sources:
-let's say you are drawing a sphere, first you would make a red circle.
-the circle here is an eye rapingly bright colour so let's make it darker.
-this is a darker version, to the eye it still looks like a circle so let's fix that.
if you had a light source what would happen? some parts would get lighter in colour right? so here we have our light source, try to imagine how the light would hit it from that angle and use a brighter version of your colour to make the shading.
-when you have your shaded circle you need to think about what parts will recieve the most light in this case since the light is from the upper right there would be a circular brighter point
-here is the ball. if it was made of some kind of rubber that did not reflect light that much you could consider this done.
-but if you wanted to make say: an apple or something with a reflective surface you would add a simple white spot to show how reflective it is.
-Now if you wanted to add more detail to the apple you would put a stem which would also have shading and leave a shadow on the apple.
of course a real apple or object has some nubs and things on them so if you had a lot of detail then you would have to put more shadows.
[URL=http://www.cubeupload.com][IMG]http://www.cubeupload.com/files/fe5800shadingdemo.png[/IMG][/URL]
I encourage you to zoom in and out from the tip of the stem to see the epic 3d effect.
MAYBE TO BE CONTINUED
edit: did I leave anything out?
When we get the new pw custom thing, this should be moved there and hopefully stickied. I'll add more tomorrow.

Shouldn't actually. Seeing as it's general MS Paint help.

You didn't read half the thread's original post did you?
Make a PW tut/help/get started thread when the custom forum goes online.

Also it's not like I can't change the titles thread and a few text.
