The Irish government says it will hold a referendum next year on whether to change the country's laws on abortion, one of the strictest in Europe.
Voters will be asked to decide whether to change the Irish constitution under which abortion is only allowed if the life of the mother is in danger.
A woman convicted of having an illegal abortion faces up to 14 years in jail. But they are allowed to travel abroad for terminations.
The vote could be held in May or June.
The Eighth Amendment of the Irish constitution, introduced in 1983, gives an equal right to life to a pregnant woman and an unborn child.
My facebook timeline is gonna get real fun
I am still amazed that in a first world country abortion is illegal.
Same story in NI iirc
i don't have much confidence it will change but I certainly hope it does
There are posters up in Town which I first thought were pro-abortion. The first one I saw just said "My daughter was conceived in rape." With a thing about the woman pictured speaking about it on Saturday.
Then I saw one that said "I was conceived by rape,..." and I didn't catch the last part, which immediately got me questioning what was up. I later found out it says "I was conceived in rape, I'm a person too." I may be paraphrasing slightly.
The last one I saw said "Our laws should punish rapists, not babies." Which I couldn't believe.
I was pretty surprised to see such outspoken anti-abortion campaigning put up. It's pretty much the same shit as when the vote for gay marriage (or as it's now known, marriage) was up and there were posters saying shit like "If we let gay people marry they'll adopt children. Think of the children." (Paraphrased, but not by much).
Rapists are already punished under Irish law, legalising abortion would just make it safer, cheaper, and less shameful for women to get abortions. There's no downside to legalising it except for conservatives being uncomfortable about the idea.
Also, for those who are curious, gay people have been allowed to adopt children in Ireland since the mid 90s. Gay marriage had nothing to do with adoption.

No, the downside is that you think legalizing the murder of children is A-OK.
