Yes, That Actually is GLaDOS in the Pacific Rim Trailer

Many geeks were either ranting or raving yesterday about the debut of the first Pacific Rim trailer (as seen below). The film is Guillermo Del Toro’s homage to giant monster films and giant robot anime, though it seems a few didn’t get the joke. How seriously can you take a movie about robots beating up monsters after all?
But there was one point of confusion during the two minute trailer. There’s a brief clip that features an Artificial Intelligence speaking, and it sounds awfully similar to another menacing computer from a game we all know and love.
Well, there’s a reason many people were getting a GLaDOS/Portal vibe from the clip. That’s because it actually IS GLaDOS. The voiceover work is done by GLaDOS’s Ellen McLain. It’s not just her however, she’s had her voice run through nearly the exact same alteration process as in Portal, which is why the two sound identical.
This isn’t breaking news, as Guillermo Del Toro announced McLain would be an AI back in October, though I don’t think anyone anticipated the voice would be exactly the same as her most famous one. Many were confused after seeing the trailer and might not know that it literally is GLaDOS’s voice rather than just a copycat interpretation.
I’m not sure how I feel about this. No, it’s doubtful the film is actually calling her GLaDOS as that would be a definite overstep, but that voice is so iconic, it almost seems like an overreach to use it. As a fan of both Del Toro and Portal, I’m not so sure about the move. This goes beyond “homage” to the point where it might be a bit distracting for the film if we’re constantly associating the voice with another iconic character every time it utters a word. It’s like if they threw Kratos in Wrath of the Titans, or something similarly out of the blue.
That said, Del Toro is a great director and I’m looking forward to seeing Idris Elba and Charlie Hunnam beat the crap out of monsters using giant mechs. Guns? Missiles? Nukes? Nope, we fight honorably with only our enormous metal fists.

Yea, we know. Kinda obvious
Not sure how seriously I'm expected to take this movie...
gundam vs godzilla

With a rocket fist to the face.
Knowing Aperture Science with their weight loss gel and quantum shower curtains, these robots were probably designed originally as a mobile carwash.
Somehow I don't think this movie will be anything spectacular.
Hopefully not worse than Battleship
The trailer looks cool, which means the movie is probably going to bomb.
I want to see it just because no kaiju films since 2004.

All the best bits in the trailer, don't have to watch the movie now.
For some reason:

This is actually the first movie I'm genuinely excited for and not just going "oh yeah that looks cool sure not saying that because it's intensely-popular oscar bait or anything" in awhile.
I'm hype.
So we have giant robots, high tech armor, ninjas, artificial intelligence, monsters from another dimension, and a smart-mouthed black man all in one movie. Isn't this the sort of thing you're supposed to make in the summer?

Even if battleship wasn't a good movie it was still an enjoyable one, I laughed at some of the jokes and the combat scenes weren't all that bad. Not sure what else you'd expect from a movie like that.

You forgot one
Her voice is completely unfitting for the setting.
It's like I'm watching some fandubbed shit where they decided to add Glad0s' voice in for shits and giggles.
The very start the narrating work wasnt really that good.
Really. Someone manages to get a AAA movie budget for a mecha movie and they choose the worst possible one.
Not the awesome mech warrior styled western mecha.
Not the heavily detailed and well designed variable fighters from macross/robotech.
Not even the ridiculous, but still entertaining armored core style high speed Japanese mecha.
No. They went with the stupid fucking giant and completely pointless design. The absolute worst possible one. This makes me sad on the inside.

I thought Battleship was actually a good movie. I don't really know what others expected out of it, but I thought it was good for what it was.
manly american evangelion vs. underwater godzilla
probably not going to be good
What the hell's the point? It just seems so pointless for her inclusion.
this movie looks like a ridiculous mix of godzilla and neon genesis evangelion
i kind of want to see it actually

oh
looks fucking awesome but the GLados shit is seriously gimmicky

Valve, do something, please.
Why does it have to have a point? Take it for what it is, giant robots beating the shit out of giant sea monsters with fucking rocket fists. I'm going to see it simply for the FX.

That's all it is, and the only reason to watch it. just like Avatar, no story, all eye candy. It's still good, but watching it for the story is like watching porn for a plot.
Glados on the other hand... why the hell?
I don't fucking care about story or plot, just show me an hour of Power Rangers vs the Kraken and I'll be happy with this movie.
I can't say if the movie is going to be good or bad, it's the first trailer and a poor one at that. (except for the rocket punch that was fucking awesome).
However, I do know it's fucking Guillermo Del Toro and giant monsters and robots. I mean this has a chance of fucking up, but I hold Toro at high regard in terms of handling ideas.
I'm probably gonna go see this simply for the novelty factor. It looks like a generic mecha anime, but live-action and reasonably high-budget.

I agree with you, but we both know this comes down to money. All those styles you mentioned are popular with niche audiences. This looks like it's going for the much larger fan base of nostalgic Iron Giant, rock'em sock'em robots, and Godzilla fans.
If it's any consolation, there are glimpses of other mechs in the trailer which may have the different styles you mentioned.
