• Hundreds of Kenyan girls hide in schools for Christmas, fearing genital mutilation by parents
Schools that should have closed more than a month ago for the holidays are staying open for the girls, while others are staying in churches in north-western Pokot County. Alice Jebet, 14, says there are financial, as well as cultural reasons, why so many parents support the practice: "My parents force us to undergo FGM because they want dowry. When girls are circumcised, their parents have already arranged for them to be married off. "When they finish the initiation, their parents introduce them to their husband, whose family gives them cows as dowry," she tells the BBC. Despite the introduction of stiff penalties for offenders after FGM was made illegal in 2011, the practice continues in many parts of Kenya. Girls are most at risk during the December holidays, traditionally a time for initiation rites for both boys and girls. Headteachers have been told to accommodate the girls and to ensure they attend classes throughout the year, to prevent them being married off at a very young age or forced to undergo FGM in secret. One in five women in Kenya between the ages of 15 and 49 is circumcised, according to government figures. There is also a worrying trend towards younger and younger girls being forced to undergo the procedure. Of women in their early 20s who were circumcised, around a quarter of them said they underwent the procedure when they were between five and nine years old, according to a recent report from the country's bureau of statistics.
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-38382837
where did this practise even originate from
What the fuck is with countries and morbid traditions like this? Does anyone who enforces them ever actually stop and think about how fucking sick and disgusting they are? Holy shit. If anyone is curious what FGM is - it's cutting off a woman's clitoris. A male equivalent would be cutting off the head of the penis.
The worst part is that that's the light version of it. In some cultures they'd sew it shut then slice it open on the wedding night then try to have a baby in 9 months
The worst part is that that's the light version of it. In some cultures they'd sew it shut then slice it open on the wedding night then try to have a baby in 9 months
Thats fucked.
where did this practise even originate from
Removing pleasure from sexual acts with the goal of keeping them from seeking out extra-marital sex.
Imagine living in a place where torture resulting in permanent damage is acceptable because you were born the wrong sex. I don't know how they can live with themselves.
This shit is still going on meanwhile sjw feminists are tackling feminist issues by complaining about man-spreading and the ac being too cold at work.
This shit is still going on meanwhile sjw feminists are tackling feminist issues by complaining about man-spreading or the ac being too cold at work, great work.
You can care about more than one thing.
You can care about more than one thing.
Caring about non existent issues is not caring at all.
Caring about non existent issues is not caring at all.
That doesn't make any sense but alright !
That doesn't make any sense but alright !
Mansplaining and and manspreading are not issues. Caring about them, is a lot like not really caring when there are actual issues that need attending. Makes sense to me.
I didn't say they are issues, but I am saying that someone can consider one thing an issue and still care about a much larger issue. They're not mutually exclusive. You don't have a "I care about this many issues" limit.

I mean realistically you know they aren't devoting as much time to the actual issues as you could be if your even contemplating trying to solve "man spreading" through out your day. More of an optimization tweak I guess.
Most people can't or don't really do much to solve "large" issues anyway so the point in general is moot.

The only way to change these countries would be education.
There isn't such limit, but it sure looks silly to complain about having wet socks when your entire city floods
Of course it does. But hey, wet socks can suck too.
This shit is still going on meanwhile sjw feminists are tackling feminist issues by complaining about man-spreading and the ac being too cold at work.
Kind of selfish that you somehow turned this horror story into "grr feminists"
Kind of selfish that you somehow turned this horror story into "grr feminists"
Hey if I lived in the UAE I'd be pissed at them too, like this person Kind of like dying of thirst while the person next to you complains about how their water has flakes of dust in it

It's called the vocal minority. It's even addressed in one of the posts in that thread where they have never encountered of the crazy shit online in reality.
Most people can't or don't really do much to solve "large" issues anyway so the point in general is moot.
And they can 'solve' mansplaining/spreading/etc? And 'solving' it isn't the point people are making here. They're saying "if they spent even half as much time as they do talking about this useless garbage instead talking about real issues like this, it would have more exposure and something might get done." But no, people moving their legs on a bus is more important than genital mutilation in a far away country for some damn reason. [editline]22nd December 2016[/editline] I honestly think the far-left is just as guilty as the far-right when it comes to the whole racism claim. The very same reasons the far-right have for going after Obama at every twist and turn, the far-left use to claim to speak for all colored people and ignore the plights of those abroad. Why would white American women care about how Africans are suffering? The only thing they can empathize with is their detached and borderline sociopathic loathing of every movement a man makes that they can't understand. They compare their annoyances with actual suffering. It goes to show just how damn privileged these people are.

People don't do much for either type of issue. But spreading awareness of either doesn't take much more than hitting the "share" button on Facebook. My entire point is that you can care about two things. Heck, you can care about three things. Maybe some of the things are dumb. Maybe some of them are not dumb. It's just very silly for people to say "why are people caring about this but not this" when people are able to care about more than one thing.
this thread went to shit fast. take the arguments to PMs.
That doesn't make any sense but alright !
I think its you that don't make any sense tbh.
I think its you that don't make any sense tbh.
All I said is that you can care about more than one thing. What an astonishing concept.
The worst part is that that's the light version of it. In some cultures they'd sew it shut then slice it open on the wedding night then try to have a baby in 9 months
Actually not always - as a man, you're expected to be able to penetrate/strech out that type of closure (type 4), and it's emasculating if you don't. In that case, someone is found in secret to cut it open. Since this is usually left the size of a match stick, this can take months, and occasionally the female relatives of the groom watch to just confirm that the matchstick hole is there.

Like ive seen some gore and stuff in my life, but that shit is really really disturbing... its the stuff i cant shake. Genital mutilation is horrendous...

Where does that happen?
What the fuck is with countries and morbid traditions like this? Does anyone who enforces them ever actually stop and think about how fucking sick and disgusting they are? Holy shit.
When you're raised to think and believe to your culture's standards and traditions, it's kind of hard to compare our morals to theirs. If moralistic individuals who realized it was fucked up were more common, they're probably either dead or this wouldn't be as much of a problem (optimistically speaking).
