Police in Houston say the death of a 19-year-old who apparently shot himself while taking selfies was a tragic accident.
The shooting happened after Deleon Smith and his cousin found a handgun.
It's believed they were posing with it while taking selfies and posting them online when Smith held the gun to his neck and pulled the trigger.
Another Darwin Award, folks.
What a fucking retard.
A gun in the home is "43 times more likely to be used to kill a member of the household than to kill a criminal intruder."
Accidents make up a large percentage of that figure. This isn't a gun control argument, it's a warning: if you have a gun in the house, keep it in a safe place and make sure that everybody in the home knows exactly how to safely handle it. The most dangerous combination is guns left in the open in an environment where people are ignorant about gun safety.
If you can't do that, you shouldn't own a gun.
Exactly. Gun lockers/cabinets should be the bare minimum to own guns in the US, like it is here in Norway.
If you can't afford one, you have the wrong hobby.
Or you could just show your kid the gun and teach them basic rules such as treat it as if it is loaded.

FIREARMS SHOULD NEVER BE ACCESSIBLE AND IN THE OPEN WITH CHILDREN.
Say it with me. This is how you get dead children. I don't care how educated they are you DO NOT DO IT.
They are children, being contrary and precocious is in their job description.
Lock up your fucking guns if you have kids.

19 seems a bit old to call a kid

no thanks

he could have just been speaking in general terms tho
19 seems a bit old to call a kid
he managed to shoot himself anyway. plus i'm 23 and i still consider myself a "kid"
educating your kids on rules of gun safety is no excuse for ignoring those same rules yourself
I think everyone of all ages should get a little PSA on how to fully unload, secure and basically "make safe for fucking around with" semi-auto handguns and other common weapons.
You should probably still properly secure your guns in like a closet or something but nobody's gonna do that, so might aswell help the dudes that interact with guns randomly strewn about the place.
This is fortunately a mistake people only make once.

I've had access to guns my whole life and haven't killed myself. kids don't care to play with stuff that isn't a mystery to them. educate them on what they are, what they're used for, and appropriate situations to handle them and nothing will ever happen.
this dude was 19 years old. if he didn't feel that it was some scary thing he's not supposed to touch then he would have never even picked it up.

they shouldn't be fucked around with, why should they be safe to fuck around with? rule 1 of gun safety is to always treat it as if it's loaded.
he could have just been speaking in general terms tho
Yeah, was speaking generally, I read the words "kid" and "gun" in the same sentence and had a full on public safety autism seizure. I'm still trying to get the shit out of the seat of my office chair.
hey guys if you want to keep living life don't wave a gun at your face and pull the trigger

This guy is 19, not a child. It's a lot different then a 7 year old.
Or you could just show your kid the gun and teach them basic rules such as treat it as if it is loaded.
Children are fucking idiots who think they know better, they will find a way to hurt or kill someone or themselves if given the chance.
This guy is 19, not a child. It's a lot different then a 7 year old.
then why did you call him a kid :why:

I dunno, I don't see a lot of stories about kids stabbing themselves or stabbing other kids in the same ways I see guns, and knives are far easier accessed. Seems like more of an education problem.
I already get really scared and am really paranoid just having those cooking lighters pointed at me, even though it's a small harmless flame unless I really get close. Having a real gun pointed at me, even unloaded would probably give me a panic attack. How are these people capable of even doing this in the first place, even without pulling the trigger?

Knives don't suddenly and explosively eject a projectile with gentle handling. We also don't help mom make sandwiches with a gun and get a general idea what guns are for daily. One's a tool with a multitude of uses, the other is built to kill living beings.

They don't. He pulled the trigger thinking it was unloaded.

I was referring to the person in the article, who else would it be..?

no thanks
Why no thanks? So don't show them basic safety rules and let this happen? Um...
Yeah, was speaking generally, I read the words "kid" and "gun" in the same sentence and had a full on public safety autism seizure. I'm still trying to get the shit out of the seat of my office chair.
So don't show them basic safety, then? Just hide it away and hope they don't ever find it or get access to it? If you teach kids gun safety and the ramifications of 'playing' with it, at least the kid is less likely to get themselves killed if they DO get access, à la the guy in the OP. Even if you have a safe, there's a decent chance over the course of 18 years that they could learn the combination/passcode/etc to it.
It's straight up stupid to go full "autistic seizure" mode just because "gun" and "kid" are in the same sentence. You can teach them basic safety and then hide it back away, just as hidden as it was before. It's not like you just hand a kid a loaded gun all willy nilly, Jesus.

Did I ever say not to? With children in the house, yes, you keep the gun hidden away - in a locked gun safe. If you want to teach kids about firearm safety, or go to the range with your educated child, sure, take it out, but when the gun's not in use, you lock it the fuck up.
Nothing's going to stop 8 year old Timmy from not realizing the consequences of his actions when he decides to take your loaded 38 out of the nightstand and smoke you with it for taking his xbox away - especially since you're the one that taught him it kills people.

You do know the study that made that assertion was debunked so thoroughly when it finally was peer-reviewed that even the author says the number is close to 2 times, right?
Why didn't this guy know the basic rules of gun safety? They teach this shit as far back as kindergarten.
An eight year old isn't going to flat out kill his father over this sort of shit, especially if the dad teaches the kid right.

I dunno where or when you went to school, but that's not the case where I was. These days, it's a felony to even have a gun anywhere near a school if you're not a cop.

They may be teens, but if they can do it, a kid can do it.
