As a martial art, the techniques involved could technically be from any non-weapon-based martial art, but, in practice, they are almost always from or based on Muay Thai kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (No Gi) grappling. So basically, if you know or practice both Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu, you mostly practice MMA. A lot of MMA fighters were also prior boxers and incorporate Boxing techniques as well. As a sport, it involves full-contact fights with rules varrying depending on any one of the orgainzations existing worldwide. There are also varrying weight-classes. In the USA, the most popular league is Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Some other major orgaizations include World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) and King of the Cage (here is a full list of organizations). Depending on the particular league, fights may take place in a octagon-shaped cage or possibly in a traditional boxing ring. Orgainizations may or may not include a woman's division. Fights almost never involve pads (aside from fight gloves) and are very brutal and violent. Organizations such as UFC receive much public criticism for this. Due to this, live broadcasted UFC events are only available on Pay-Per-View in the USA, and subsequently released on DVDs. Some websites do Live Video Stream, but you can expect these to be pretty laggy. Depending on the organization, fights can be won by KO, TKO, Submission, or Judge's Decision. ***I WANT TO PRATICE MMA!*** Find a gym nearby that teaches both Muay Thai kickboxing and Jiu-Jitsu grappling. Searching "MMA" in Google Maps for your local area will probably do the trick. Bring a mouthguard, water, and a towel. Lesson-plans are very pricy nowadays, given the current state of the economy. If you want to make full committment, also buy gloves, hand guards, athletic wrap, some type of head guard, and shin-instep pads. Attend as often as you can and don't skip lessons or take breaks. Start working out as well - this is very important if you want to win fights, because, in all honesty, the guy who gets the takedown or KO is almost always the stronger/faster guy (though smaller guys still win via judge's decision if they are more skilled in technique). Run and do calisthenics (push ups & sit ups) 5 days per week. Having a training partner exercising with you is great motivation. Swimming is also a great cardio exercise. Weight-lifting to build muscle strength and endurance is also important if you're serious about MMA. Save you're money on home equipment and sign up at a gym. Again, pricey. This is an expensive sport. Buying your own equipment for the home is more costly up front, though it can have long-term benefits. Just make sure you're not avoiding the gym so that you can do half-effort exercises at home where no one's working with you. This shit is awesome. Gets the adrenaline going, seeing dudes get cornered in a cage match and kicked the SHIT out of.
That looks brutal
MMA is retarded [editline]02:20PM[/editline] PREMONITION: banned for "why reply"
Good stuff. I don't watch the UFC fights very often, but I've been training in Gracie Jujitsu for about two years now. One of the most effective forms of one-on-one combat in the world.
MMA is pretty badass. Pride fighting is definetely my favorite, it's the most brutal but the most exciting for me.

Early retirement due to clinical issues ahoy.

Good self-defense stuff in Judo.
MMA is fun. I'm in to it. I just started doing karate again (I did it when I was like 9) about 1 month ago. We do a lot of cool stuff and some of it is MMA grappling ~mounts, etc. Currently I'm just a sleazy white belt, but the classes are set up so I get to work/train/whatever with higher belts, such as Brown belts with a stripe. It's a pretty diverse class. Very fun and I love every second of it. The style of karate I do is Kenpo. UPDATE: I'm a Purple belt now and I've been doing MMA since this post, so that's close to year now. Waayyyyyy back in October I went my school's tournament and did grappling. I fought a black belt and got gold. About a month ago I got choked out during class. It's weird getting knocked out..... Just thought it'd be good to update instead of making a new post.
Did any1 watch UFC 99 last night? I was gonna stream it, but unfortunately my g/f came over. :bang: [editline]07:17AM[/editline] WTF, Wanderlei lost??? Did anyone watch this fight?
Ok, good enough thread I guess. But I'm quite pissed off regarding the "very brutal and violent" part. You're just perpetuating the image that the UFC and hell, MMA in general has tried so hard to get rid of. Ask the average person what they know of it today and it comes off as a bloodsport, which it is anything but. Hell, wanna know the truth of it? the UFC alone is more safe than boxing is, contrary to popular belief.
Did any1 watch UFC 99 last night? I was gonna stream it, but unfortunately my g/f came over. :bang:
You should be fortunate that she ever comes over. Come on man, you're like one of those kids who'd play WoW over spending time with a fine honey.

I've seen boxing matches and UFC matches, and although both guys tend to leave the ring in one piece in both, there seems to be a lot more damage done by UFC fighters. Their gloves look to be a lot lighter than boxing gloves, and they use more fighting techniques. I guess that doesn't add up to more safe in my mind.
Love MMA, great sport to watch and practice, UFC 99 was wicked - too bad about Cro Cops fight, getting a win by a accidental poke is kind of dissapointing but meh.. I actually help one MMA fighter with nutrition during winter, he's rather good too, 14-2-1 record, BJJ black belt and 12 years of kickboxing experience..

In the OP, why do you have a picture of women fighting? That's so boring and stupid. No one wants to see women fighting unless they have big, bouncy boobies. And are in mud.
:geno:
ah crap sorry I missed that i skimread because I wanted to post

They just lay down on the ground hugging each other most of the time.
They just lay down on the ground hugging each other most of the time.
This.
I did some MMA.
I love people that say, "Yeah, I take MT twice a week and I roll once a week, I'm a MMA fighter". No, you're not. Professional fighters, who train 7x a week, 12 hours a day in MMA, are MMA fighters. Not you. I'm a boxer (4x a week), and I wrestle (3x a week), while perhaps at one point in the future I could train to be an MMA athlete, right now, I would not consider myself one at this point.
I did some MMA at my dream.
Fixed.
They just lay down on the ground hugging each other most of the time.
You do realise the energy needed to control a person who is as strong as you and weighs the same, also think about the force being pressed upon the person below and the amount of pain it could be.
