BBC NEWS
India has unveiled its first home-built aircraft carrier from a shipyard in southern Kerala state. The 37,500 tonne INS Vikrant is expected to go for extensive trials in 2016 before being inducted into the navy by 2018, reports say. With this, India joins a select group of countries capable of building such a vessel. Other countries capable of building a similar ship are the US, the UK, Russia and France. Monday's launch of INS Vikrant marks the end of the first phase of its construction. The ship will be then re-docked for outfitting and further construction. It was designed and manufactured locally, using high grade steel made by a state-owned steel company.
Source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-india-23662726
Small advancements are still useful and it's nice that India knows how to make such a craft. I wonder what'll happen when the Admiral Gershkov finally comes into Indian service after being refitted.
For a quick comparison of dubious accuracy against other countries' aircraft carrier types, here's a little graphic:
Gandhi has advanced to the modern era. Better nuke him.
no. in civ it goes. modern > atomic
US, the UK, Russia and France.
Missing China there.
no. in civ it goes. modern > atomic
cool
cool
yes very cool [editline]12th August 2013[/editline] But to be on topic, I'm actually kind of happy for India despite the massive growth issue.
Missing China there.
They haven't managed to build a carrier, from scratch that is. Their current one was bought from Ukraine. However they are building one on their own.

Like they did with their rifles, helicopters, jets and many other things.

They're a bit more advanced than they are often given credit for.
Using domestically produced inferior weapons and ammunition is not what I'd call being advanced tbh.
[del]Well, tbh, they have never been tested in real warfare, so I don't really understand how you can know that they're inferior.[/del] Scratch that, don't want to derail the thread.
I'm glad for them, but I wish they didn't have to exist.
