Poll finds 53 per cent of Australians support same-sex marriage
A CLEAR majority of Australians believe same sex couples should be allowed to get married, with 53 per cent of people saying they see no reason why same sex unions should not be legal.
According to tomorrow’s Essential Report by polling and lobbying firm EMC, just 36 per cent of Australians believe the law should remain unchanged to recognise marriage as being between a man and a woman. The remaining 11 per cent are undecided.
The research comes as Federal Parliament today heard calls for all MPs to gauge their constituents on the question ahead of a formal debate on gay marriage.
A number of federal Liberal MPs have privately expressed support for gay marriage, the Australian Greens say.
The minor party will introduce a motion to the House of Representatives later today calling on all parliamentarians to gauge their constituents' views on the issue of same-sex marriage equality.
Greens sexuality spokeswoman Sarah Hanson-Young said her gay marriage bill would "sit on the tables" until the major parties allowed a conscience vote on gay marriage.
But she indicated that many Liberal MPs disagreed with Opposition Leader Tony Abbott's conservative position.
"You'd be surprised the number of liberals within the Liberal Party who shake their heads at Tony Abbott's stonewalling on this issue," Senator Hanson-Young told reporters today.
"Some of them have already come forward over the last few weeks and there will be more."
More MPs would come forward if a conscience vote was allowed on the issue but were constrained because of the positions adopted by the major parties, she added.
Senator Hanson-Young called on Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Mr Abbott to listen to the debate after the Greens lower house MP Adam Bandt introduces the motion, and grant a conscience vote to their MPs.
Ms Gillard is refusing to allow a conscience vote of Labor MPs on the issue.
Err, I'm a hugely outspoken proponent for same sex rights, but 53% isn't really a clear majority unless you're just comparing against the 36% who are against it.
Exaggerations don't do a movement much good.
Well it would come down to the 11% who have yet to decide.
53% + 36% is 89%
No we don't.
Made up statistics ftw.
per cent
Couldn't care less about same-sex marriages. There's virtually no difference in the law now between non-gay and gay couples, so I don't see it worth fighting over the status of marriage.
The change will come when the country is ready.

Australian or American cents?
as far as I'm concerned two faggots that love each other deserve the opportunity to get the same benefits that two squares that hate each other can

Who even bothers with shrapnel anyway? EFTPOS all the way.
I don't know why they want to be able to marry. really, you pay out the arse for a legal document saying YOU'RE MARRIED!!
From a biological prespective i dont see the point of gay marrige, when a man marries a woman he has the legal right to have children with her but with gays they cant have children so whats the point of marrige other than adoption (which dosent increase national population).

First off we don't even want to increase population. And anyway there are plenty of married heterosexual couples who don't have kids. Marriage =/= having kids
prolly cuz 11% of australia is bisexual

I know but it gives you the legal right to have kids, also gay marriage would encourage homosexuality which can decrease birth rate.

wat
I know but it gives you the legal right to have kids, also gay marriage would encourage homosexuality which can decrease birth rate.
err... you don't have to be married to legally have children, also how can recognizing gay marriage 'encourage homosexuality' people aren't suddenly going to go "Gay marriage is legal now I think I'll become a faggot.", maybe it will encourage closeted gays to come out but it won't turn straight people queer. Or if by that you mean gay parents will raise gay kids resulting in a larger homosexual population, there's been no causal link shown that gay parents are anymore likely than straight parents to raise gay children.
Legal rights and benefits.
Gay couples in Australia have virtually identical legal rights as married couples do. There are no extra benefits or different legal rights.
If the change was made in Australia, it would be for the status only, nothing else. I'm guessing this is different to the US.

36% Australians missed the for button.
