• A tale of double jeopardy and deceit to go down in the ages

I'll start this tale by saying that my father was a great man, supporting a family of 4 on a meager construction worker's income. We lived off of little more than ramen noodles and water except occasionally, but I had a great childhood. I may not have had the better things in life but I was healthy and born into a loving family (excluding my mother, which I'll explain later.) I woke up one day and scratched a tick bite from the previous day's work on the house- my father and I had been building a pair of steps to the back door of the trailer, which was now on stilts to prevent flooding. My father waved me into the kitchen where we had a fantastic breakfast of boiled eggs, pinto beans, and fish. (My father was vegetarian, except for some types of fish- as am I.) You notice I refer to my father in the past tense- and, sadly, it's because he's deceased now- but the story of how that happened is why I'm writing this. After a day's fun and work on improving our domain, we settled down to share a bed, as we couldn't afford any more furniture than a few chairs, a television, and one bed. My mother was out of town on business, so we stayed up a bit late that night watching some of our favorites. About midnight I drifted off to sleep. I woke up in the morning and my mother was here. Figuring he had to work on the weekend and she finished her business early, I groggily shook sleep from my head and adjourned to the kitchen for breakfast. Before I had sat down, my mother's words rang out.. "Your father isn't with us any more." I couldn't believe it, I was shocked.. But I'm not telling you this story to describe the throes of grief. My mother was taken into custody by the police later that day for murder. I was absolutely awestruck- their marriage hadn't been all that bad.. Was it? As it turned out, my father was running a drug selling gig on the side and he wasn't letting my mother in on the cash, because she would have simply spent it on frivolous things. (This was why she worked- to shop. My father provided income.) She ended up stabbing him in his sleep and facing trial, and she, in her insanity, admitted the crime and told them where she had dumped the body. They found nothing there. After many interrogations she came up with the same answer on its location- I could only think that, some how, my father had survived. I was lodging with my sister when a knock came up on our door. The pale face of my father came into the frame. I don't need to explain that you that she hadn't succeeded in killing him, and the times were back to normal. He, however, couldn't forgive my mother for what she did and opted not to inform the police that her late husband wasn't late. Because no body was found and she pleaded guilty, they gave her five years (Which is ridiculous, I know.) The days flew by. Eventually she was scheduled to be released and she was scheduled for a visiting term with me. My father was prepared to confront her. Are you aware of the double-jeopardy clause in the constitution that states that, if convicted guilty of a specific crime, one cannot be charged with it again? Well, my mother (after learning of his fortune in escaping death), shot him dead later that month. The trial was thrown out over that very clause. I am an empty husk of what was once a livid boy.
