The hypocrisy of Duke Nukem Forever's distaste for new shooter heroes is clear early in the game. Duke is disgusted when offered a Halo-like suit of armor, asserting that his unassailable machismo is more resilient than any association with modernized entries of a genre he helped define in the mid-1990s. Yet Duke can only carry two guns at a time and has a regenerating health bar, elements popularized by the game he so readily dismisses. Duke Nukem Forever suggests Duke's compulsive need to pull the trigger to broadcast his manliness is enough to overcome any obstacle, which, as it turns out, it's not.
There was never anything complicated about Duke Nukem. He was an icon in his 1990s heyday because he was more than a floating gun. Duke had a voice, spouting action and comedy movie quotes. He made Army of Darkness' "Hail to the king, baby" his own, and lifted lines from Aliens, Dirty Harry and more to make sure his enemies knew he didn't accidentally pull the trigger. Duke Nukem has always been a walking joke, a vainglorious 1980s-style action star parody overflowing with testosterone and disdain for anything that doesn't involve squashing aliens, drinking or girls. In Duke Nukem Forever, he hasn't changed

Don't care still gonna get this game.
This is not news; it's a review.
And we all know the game sucks, it's old news.
Are you surprised? I tried the demo and realised that it was awful. The non combat sequences were cool simply because of how much there was to interact with; However, come gunfighting I found myself getting bored and frustrated.
Is anyone really surprised about this? Assuming the demo isn't a horribly old beta version of DNF, the game really doesn't have much substance that you couldn't get from the older Duke Nukem titles. Hell, the graphics aren't even close to impressive.

High five.
Duke Nukem Forever's combat should have played more like Bullet storm or Half Life 2: S mod, something over the top with tons of awesomeness while still being somewhat competitive.
Instead they didn't even try, there's absolutely nothing unique to the combat really other than steroids, beer, and executions (which happen rarely, and it's always just duke punching an enemy in the face)
They tried too hard.
IGN reviews are usually the worst, DNF wasn't a disaster, but it was subpar
Ninegn reviews are almost never the worst. Expect lower scores elsewhere.
the driving mechanics was awful

Worst as in wrong.

Yea, I agree. But they're not wrong this time. Consider Eurogamer's 3 page review in which they awarded it a 3/10. This is a terrible game no matter how you slice it.
Well, times like this I'm glad I have no standard of quality so I'll enjoy it no matter what.
Gasp.
I think this game would have failed anyways, no game could live up to so many years in production, and still not be a disappointment.
once HL3/Episode 3 is released, we will have no more horribly delayed games :saddowns:

Wow something IGN actually realized and got right more then half the people who hate DNF. Do you guys actually beleive people loved Duke Nukem because of carrying more weapons, health packs and gameplay, hell no, those 3 things were standard back then and DOOM and Wolfenstein had them. If Dukes character was nothing special and there was nothing to interact with then Duke 3D would have been extremely generic.
People also forgot there were 3rd person shooter Dukes (land of the babes and time ot kill) and side scrollers (Duke 1 and 2 and Manhattan Project) but everyone forgot those which had completely different styles then Duke 3D and think that Duke 3D was the only Duke game that existed. I love Duke 3Ds gameplay but I really don't like Time to Kills or land of the babes style of gameplay.
Duke 3D was remember able because of his character and what you could interact with not because he had gameplay mechanics which were standard back then. Concerning what made duke remember able (character and interactivity) DNF has plenty of it and even more then Duke 3D in terms of interactivity and other game references.
The 2 gun mechanic was stupid. I don't remember the other DN games being like that.

But I love Duke Nukem 3D NOW because it has those things. They're sorely missing from "modern" FPS titles, and I miss them. The lack of these things has made FPS design lazy.
Consider Eurogamer's 3 page review in which they awarded it a 3/10.
I went looking for that, and I'm shocked to say that IGN actually did a better review!
Check this quote for example:
Most alarmingly, all the weapons are repeated from 1996, and there are no new enemy types either.
Clearly whoever played it didn't notice the railgun, the 2 different alien blasters, the enforcer mini-rocket gun, or the adjusted freezeray from the freezethrower - along with the enforcer enemy itself or pregnators as a replacement for the uninspiring slimes.
While I don't like DNF at all, at least I did actually play it.
I'm still going to buy it though, it may have some major flaws, but it's still (IMO) better than most of the games released nowadays.

True, while it would be amazing if modding tools were released or future games (I hope there will be) so we could have tons of weapons at once, health packs and awesome gameplay. But my point is that many peoples arguments against DNF are "It doesn't have those things so it's not a Duke game" while it was nothing Duke 3D created, just a standard gameplay mechanic.
I don't care about these reviews, I'll judge it myself when I play it.
Also... who else saw this coming?
Played through most of it now. I'm actually quite enjoying it. Of course, people that were expecting this to be "game of the year, all years" are gonna be highly disappointed.
im mostly getting it for the items in balls o steel edition
that and i want an unserious immature game
Garry was right this whole time

I think most people are sore because Duke 3D was an innovative title in its' day, and with 12+ years of development, we were hoping for some more attempted innovation this time too - somewhat outdated maybe due to the development time, but certainly not just game mechanics copied wholsale from other games.
For me, the worst kicker is that if they'd made an FPS with just the mechanics of the original Duke3D title, that would actually be innovative again today, only sharing such space with Bulletstorm.

I wanted it to be great, but these last couple of weeks I realised it wasn't going to be any where near as great as I'd hope, just too much hype, too many developers so it suffered a lot for it. The duke humour and interactivity saved it from being terrible. The version shown at E3 2001 had so much great stuff, and you saw very little of it in the final version.
What games meet hype nowadays anyway?
Demo was horrible. Not worth $60 at all.

lol no the gameplay was revolutionary at the time it came out
the character for me was just annoying colour to make the game different from doom
