Darrell Issa, the richest man in Congress, said America has made "our poor somewhat the envy of the world."
Asked by CNNMoney whether he feels personally responsible to address income inequality in the United States, the Republican Congressman from California said "absolutely." But he noted that America is the richest country on earth and implied that those in poverty here are better off than the poor in other nations.
Issa's personal wealth is by far the greatest of any congress member. His net worth in 2013 was $448.4 million, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, and stems from a car alarm business he built.

what a shit kicker.
Not to say any poverty is okay at all, but there's gotta be some European countries with better poverty conditions than American poverty.
-snip-
Oh man, our poor get the best dirt!
I don't know, from what I hear America's poor people got it really bad. Working 2+ jobs while still barely affording the basic stuff and all that.
There are people in 3rd world countries who wish they could clean grease out of our deep fryers.
I mean I guess if you're gonna be poor you'd want to be poor in the West, but man fuck the attitude that you aren't allowed to complain if you're born in a first world country that is so often wheeled out by those who own far more wealth than most of the population.
There are people in 3rd world countries who wish they could clean grease out of our deep fryers.
I'm pretty sure a lot of people from 3rd world countries wish they could be at least homeless in 1st world country.

It's typical rich poor strategy.

Yeah at least in the US if you're poor and have no money, you can find fresh food in a dumpster. In a really shitty 3rd world country you can try to rob a store and they won't have any food to give you. I think the stores in Zimbabwe sell brand new spoiled milk because things have gotten so bad
Devils advocate: He isn't wrong.
His comment is fucking retarded beyond all belief, but he isn't exactly wrong.
Tons of people make by with less than one USD per day, and live in conditions which some people would find outright deplorable. Even though the conditions in this country towards the poor are still bad, for the most part they are still reasonable. You still can keep a roof over your head, you have clean water, easily accessible food that has to pass health inspections, and with certain amounting resources you still have a public education system in which the children of families are still given a chance to get somewhere and possibly get more money for their families.
That's a lot more then can be said for probably two maybe three billion of humans on Earth.
I don't care how much validity is in that statement, he's still a shithead for saying it. Poverty is fucking poverty, so what if America's people have it better than the rest of the world. Poverty isn't fucking funny.
Also, a rich bastard with a silver spoon in his mouth taking jabs at the poor. This can only end well.
Does he even comprehend that cost of living scales up with standard of living?
We've got it better than many, but we could definitely do more. Give our healthcare system a proper overhaul and fix the last few decades of wage stagnation and then yeah, even our poor would likely be the envy of the world.
I hate rich assholes who think they can speak for the poor. What do YOU know of the poor you fucks? Nothing.
"I'll take cognitive motherfucking dissonance for 1000, Alex..."
Also apparently he's never been to northern Europe.
it's alright on average but not the best on the planet lol
the truth is America is pretty damn alright but once we accept that we're not the best we can try to attempt to get there.
But why change when you're already on top though?
Maybe if we didn't have healthcare that puts your family in debt for generations to come what he said would have some truth.

Medical debt is absolved upon death if the estate can't pay for it. If the estate can pay for it, the estate pays for it. In cases where the estate can't pay for medical debt, and insurance can't cover it, the inheritors don't pay a cent.
America's rich are also envy of the World as well. Checkmate, capitalist.
is he actually suggesting that the poor should be thankful that they're not as bad as countries like sri lanka?
is he actually suggesting that the poor should be thankful that they're not as bad as countries like sri lanka?
Yep, that seems to be what he is suggesting.
He's trying to downplay poverty and the disgusting income equality in America.
That's just rubbing salt into a wound.
Let's see him go tell this to people in Detroit
That would be like Putin justifying his actions with "well at least I'm not Hitler".
if you think america's poor has it bad, you are clueless of what it's like for the majority of the world
for instance, in america, no matter how poor you are, you are still guaranteed help from the police and hospitals even if you're landed in millions of dollars in debt. sometimes the police or medical services might not arrive in time, but they try
in vietnam, and many, many parts of asia, the first thing you get asked by emergency services is how much money you have
they don't come at all if you don't have enough money. i know of a lot of people who were left to die because they simply could not afford medical treatment
if you ever wonder why people in third-world countries have so many fucking kids, its not because they can't afford condoms or something. many times, it's because there's such a high risk of death from ages 0-18 that they have no other choice. if they went and had two kids only, they would be easily left with no predecessors.
in america, no matter how poor you are, the risk of a child dying is far, far lower
and in america, there's all these services to help out the poor. it might not feel like much, but in many countries, you can be left with LITERALLY NOTHING.

It isn't a competition bro
Well, we're not eating fried beetles and squatting over toilet holes in the floor so I guess we're not too bad.

of all places... detroit? that makes no sense.
he should keep to himself, really. he has no room or reason to go out and say this.
I wish politicians would get off their high horses, and stop acting like they're rich gods and start helping out those in poverty. it's sad to see poverty stricken areas, but they have courage, hoping one day they'll get out of poverty.
What is disappointing is not how well off America's poor are (and they still have people living in poverty conditions equal to those in developing countries with some studies putting up to 5% of the population living on less than $2 a day and 8.7% living in multidimensional poverty which puts the USA behind a large swathe of nations you'd expect them to be better than) it is how wealthy the nation is, compared to how poorly treated such large portions of its citizenship are. When it costs only 85.7 billion dollars to increase the world's poorest incomes up to $20 a day and the US's budget is almost 4 trillion dollars a year, you'd think America's "envy of the world" poor just wouldn't exist in the first place.

If the rest of the world envy's America's poor, America's politicians are rich gods.
