Russell Brand calls for Israel boycott: Antisemite urges big businesses that 'facilitate the oppress
26 replies, posted
Brand has gone one step further in his condemnation of the Israel-Gaza conflict than simply critiquing the way various media outlets have approached coverage.
Now, the comedian is urging banks, pension funds and other big businesses to sever investment ties with Israel, or any deals that he feels “facilitate the oppression of people in Gaza”.
Using Barclays as an example, he said the bank manages “the portfolios of an Israeli defence company called Elbit, which makes the drones that bomb Gaza.”
"The message they give us is the exact opposite of the reality, they're acting like they're part of our community," he said during his new episode of The Trews, which you can watch below.
"But if we're aware of the reality of what they do, then we have the power to influence them."
Hey you, FPer, you think what this guy says is fucking dumb?
Then tell me if you think these guys are also dumb.
Antisemite? Really. Really...
Antisemite? Really. Really...
I thought that's what Israel called anyone who disagrees with what they do in the slightest.
I thought that's what Israel called anyone who disagrees with what they do in the slightest.
Yes, but Lamar is the one that added that to the title of the news.
Lamar, is it really that hard for you to stop shit posting?
I thought that's what Israel called anyone who disagrees with what they do in the slightest.
i've yet to see this happen at all tbh
I have no problem with Jews, but I have a big problem with Israel. I think I have the right to criticize a country without being labelled as a racist.
Lamar, criticizing Israel's actions is not the same thing as antisemitism.
Given where Lamar very clearly stands on the issue I'm pretty sure the "antisemite" comment was a little bit of strawmanning.

Which is immediately shot down when you realise that Semite and Semitism isn't exclusing to Israel, Jewish people or Judaism, ffs, it's a name for a language family, the people who used said language and their descendants which pretty much covers the entire area of Southwest Asia.
So by attacking Palestinians, Israel is technically being Antisemetic.
My favorite part of people loosely throwing around words like "antisemite" is that native Arab people (People who can trace their roots to Bedouin ancestry) are considered Semitic, and that makes up a large portion of the Palestinian population. Myself included. So in some ways, many right-wing Israelis can be considered "antisemites" using the same loose definition that's used today.
Before anyone rushes in to correct me, I mean specifically descendants from the Bani Qahtan and the Bani Adnan tribes.

This is dumb because he puts all the blame on one side, as most of the time with arguments regarding the matter. Such discourse is not the way to solve this conflict. It never will be.

Gah.
Every single time someone says "antisemite" on the internet.
Look, guy, this is how Dictionary.com defines "antisemitism":
anti-Semitism
[an-tee-sem-i-tiz-uh m, an-tahy-] IPA Syllables
noun
1.
discrimination against or prejudice or hostility toward Jews.
Okay? Jews.
The 19th century German who made up the term didn't need it to describe his hatred of all people of Semitic origin. Just Jews.
Word Origin and History for anti-Semitism
anti-Semitism
also antisemitism, 1881, from Ger. Antisemitismus, first used by Wilhelm Marr (18191904) Ger. radical, nationalist, and race-agitator, who founded the Antisemiten-Liga in 1879; from anti- + Semite (q.v.). Not etymologically restricted to anti-Jewish theories, actions or policies, but almost always used in this sense. Those who object to the inaccuracy of the term might try H. Adler's Judaeophobia (1882). Anti-Semitic (also antisemitic) and anti-Semite (also antisemite) also are from 1881, like anti-Semitism first in an article in the "Athenaeum" of Sept. 31, in ref. to German literature.
On the internet everyone likes to be pedantic and make up excuses

No, it's dumb because the UK buys from Elbit as well all other major Israeli defense companies and would probably like to keep getting support for the products they have, not to mention buy new stuff that currently no one else can provide.
Okay? Jews.
.
Almost always, not always 100% absoloute certainty. Guess what, it's both. Further down on that page.
Prejudice or hatred against Jews, a Semitic race.
Jews aren't the only Semetic race out there.
Except, calling out Israel for being asshole is not being prejudiced towards them or discriminating against them because they are Jews, it's calling them out for being assholes.
Or are you saying that we can't disagree with Jewish people without being called Anti Semetic?

I generally disagree with this guy and all his opinions but he's trying to refute the idea that 'anti-Semitic' refers to all people from the Middle East, when in practice it is exclusively used for Jews.
Russel brand is a retard, though.

Okay, how about Merriam Webster?
an·ti–Sem·i·tism noun \ˌan-tē-ˈse-mə-ˌti-zəm, ˌan-ˌtī-\

Full Definition of ANTI-SEMITISM
: hostility toward or discrimination against Jews as a religious, ethnic, or racial group
No? Wikipedia maybe?
Antisemitism (also spelled anti-Semitism[1] or anti-semitism) is prejudice, hatred of, or discrimination against Jews as a national, ethnic, religious or racial group.[2] A person who holds such positions is called an "antisemite". As Jews are an ethnoreligious group, antisemitism is generally considered a form of racism[citation needed].
While the conjunction of the units anti, semite and ism indicates antisemitism as being directed against all Semitic people, the term was in fact coined in Germany in 1873 as a scientific-sounding term for Judenhass ("Jew-hatred"),[3] and that has been its normal use since then.[4] For the purposes of a 2005 U.S. governmental report, antisemitism was considered "hatred toward Jews—individually and as a group—that can be attributed to the Jewish religion and/or ethnicity."
OKAY?!

Where in my post of quoting the dictionary definition of a word did I say anything like that.
In fact, could you point to a single post in the, oh I don't know, last couple of months where someone accuses someone else of being antisemitic for criticizing Israel? Let alone in this thread?
Hint: OP doesn't count. Lamar doesn't think people who criticize Israel hate Jews. Honest.
Probably off topic but we should start banning people who continuously spam articles supporting their viewpoint rather than just the articles that interest them
I think the point Scum is trying to make, is that you should not confuse the Semitic people with Antisemitism because the semitism in the latter does not address the semitic people, but the Jews, like the German Nazi Party intended. The latter terms merely points out a reference to the fact that the Jews are in fact, semitic, but it is not referring to all semitic people.
Is today over analyse SH titles day? Jesus Christ the same thing happened in the plane thread.
Russel Brand is like the dictionary definition of a sophist: use a lot of big words to try and sound smart while saying nothing valuable.

so kind of like someone who dismisses an entire argument without any refutations but instead by calling the guy who made it a word that you have to define in your post because most people don't know it?

I'll be honest: I didn't originally watch the video. I've seen enough from Russel Brand to know that it would be a complete waste of my time, but since you presented a challenge I sat there, for the whole 4:42, and my suspicions were confirmed more strongly than I would have ever imagined. The vast majority of the video is just ad hominem attacks on the bank based on their commercial that has nothing to do with his point parenthesized with a quick call to stop using them and maybe one line of explanation. He then goes on to happily point out that he uses Apple and that he can't get away from it... because it's inconvenient, I guess?
[editline]14th August 2014[/editline]
Also, a sophist is a very specific philosophical term. There really isn't any other word that sums up Russel Brand so well. I gave a quick explanation for the people who don't go out of their way to read philosophical material.
