Post an original of your desktop background, then trace it in 256 colors in Illustrator. See what happens.
To trace in 256 colors select your object then go to OBJECT>LIVE TRACE>TRACING OPTIONS. And then make your settings like this:

To upload i couldn't find a conversion setting in adobe illustrator so i saved the file and opened it in photoshop. Then saved as Jpeg.
