WELL SHIT: Zika-carrying mosquitos discovered in the US
(CNN) - Mosquitoes carrying the Zika virus have been identified in Miami Beach, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services said Thursday.
It's the first finding of Zika-carrying mosquitoes in the continental United States.
The three mosquito samples that tested positive were from the area in Miami Beach that was previously identified as an area of local transmission. Ninety-five other samples tested negative, according to the department.
"This is disappointing but not surprising," said Adam Putnam, the Florida commissioner of agriculture.

So now everyone is going to freak out about it and then it will become irrelevant like swine flu, bird flu, etc...

A major difference between zika and some major outbreaks is that zika can be really sneaky, afaik most symptoms are pretty mild. I think some groups already had some success with a vaccine though, not sure
Can someone explain the whole Zika thing?
Why are we so worried
Why is this virus just NOW becoming a problem
What does Zika do

We aren't
It's been a thing for a long time now but the news media needs something new to blow way out of proportion
makes babies in pregnant woman retarded or something which is easily fixed with the ol coat hanger and vacuum.

base disease is a lot like dengue fever, but if it is allowed to progress, it can cause Guillain-Barré syndrome, which is a rapid onset muscle weakness. This can sometimes lead to respiratory failure if allowed to progress very long.
The big issue is infection of pregnant mothers, which can cause a number of problems to the baby, mostly microcephaly.
There was news not long back about how microcephaly as a result from the Zika virus is almost exclusively confined to Brazil, when compared to other nations that had contacted it.
So, it may not be as concerning as it was initially.
We don't know all of the effects yet either, right?
Every day I am given fewer and fewer reasons to leave my house.
Im not sure what you guys are talking about, but zika can cause permanent roblems for babies before they are born. Its not like ebola, this can actually cause issues

same with Lyme disease though

Nothing a professional abortion can't fix.

dont worry you dont even have to go anywhere to get it, it comes to you

What about people who don't want abortions though.
I believe in free choice when it comes to this, but some people will make the choice that they will not abort, actually quite a few people since this florida, which is pretty conservative

If I was a woman and I knew my child was going to be this misformed I wouldn't even have second thoughts. As for people being conservative, they should imagine what it's like to have to deal with this
zika has some fairly similar symptoms with dengue and chikungunt iirc
except for the babies
I know everyone here is cool with abortions and everything but this sort of thing can be incredibly distressing for a mother.
Just abort it isn't really a solution for some people.
Gonna have to agree with this. Abortion may be a solution, but it's not an easy one for parents. It's a heavy emotional toll on them, and not an easy decision for them to make.
while I'm not against abortion, I don't think it's an easy solution for a baby who might have microcephaly due to Zika(if it becomes a thing in the mainland United States).

Imagine intentionally having a baby with microcephaly.. Yikes.

I mean, its not easy, but neither is raising a deformed total care child who will die early.
So, how long until the "Rockefeller is using Zika as a weapon" conspiracy theory comes back?
damn jay-z's marketing is getting ruthless

I'm not saying that it's a better option either, though? I'm just saying it's not as easy as people want to make it seem. As I've said, I'm not against abortion, but emotions play a major factor when it comes to moms/dads and their babies.
It's not as easy as people make it out to be, it's a very emotional one, just peeves me a bit when people say "just abort it dude what's the biggie" is all.
Nothing a professional abortion can't fix.
I know the urge to brush every media frenzy away as hysteria is strong but can we not pretend that "get an abortion LOL" is a perfectly good and easy solution rendering this not a problem at all

Oh yeah, I wasn't trying to go at you or anything, I totally agree.

Ah, no prob. Didn't mean to come off harsh, my bad man
Apparently some guy on my server said their going in with flamethrowers after mosquito populations
Serious business is going down over the next few weeks
Why are people worried? It's not like the West Nile endemic where we couldn't even figure out what the fuck was killing the victims. Chances are they won't spread from Florida and will easily be contained.
So do all women who recover from zika give bith to deformed babies? Like forever?
This can't cause a "children of men" situation, can it?
That's kind of why it is so scary. Few people who get the virus even get sick from it as the symptoms can be mild or even non-existent and you'll never know you even have it until you end up with a baby with microcephaly.
Diseases this subtle tend to be hard to contain.
Just because it's symptoms are subtle doesn't make it hard to track. The CDC has become extremely competent at tracking mosquito activity and preventing it's spread as seen by the West Nile cases in the US. If Zika carrier mosquitoes were ever present in another state, or risked spreading across the nation, we'd know.
Been like this for a while hasn't it?
Been like this for a while hasn't it?
Only for about a month

Can the base disease and its progressions be treated at the moment?
Ruining reproduction sucks, but slow weakness death doesn't sound fun either.
