Millions of television viewers are now using file-sharing services to access free and unauthorised copies of programmes, research has revealed. US drama Heroes was the most popular illegal download this year, according to research firm Big Champagne. About 55 million people downloaded the show, while 51 million chose to access Lost, the second most popular show. Visits to leading "torrent" sites, which index video and music files, have also nearly doubled in the last year. The proportion of file-sharing involving films and television rather than music is continuing to rise, the research shows. "Millions of television viewers now access free, unauthorised versions of favourite shows at least some of the time," says Eric Garland, chief executive of Big Champagne. "This is a socially acceptable form of casual piracy - and it is replacing viewing hours." Film show All of the programmes in the top 10 were American, but the survey also examined unauthorised downloads of popular BBC show Top Gear. During the most recent series, the figures show around 300,000 downloads of each episode in the days immediately following their broadcast in the UK. But the UK accounted for just 4% of the download activity, with 47% coming from the United States. Big Champagne says Top Gear has been among the most pirated television programmes internationally. The series appears on BBC America some time after it is shown in the UK, and it appears that some American fans are eager to download it before it is available legally. The research also looks at unauthorised film downloads and shows they are getting lower audiences than those for TV programmes. Top of the chart was Watchmen, downloaded nearly 17 million times, followed by The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, with 13 million. The Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire, a relatively low budget film compared with the two Hollywood blockbusters, was viewed by nearly 9 million unauthorised downloaders. The research will be presented on Saturday at the Edinburgh Television Festival in a session on what television can learn from the music industry's experience with online piracy. Mr Garland says there are major differences between the two industries and the impact on television may not be as severe as some TV executives fear: "We may see a lot of disruption but it is premature to say 'we're next'." "The effect on the business is going to be very different." Big Champagne's research also shows that the rate of piracy for live events, such as sport or talent shows, is much lower than that for popular drama series.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8224869.stm I think it's notable that the article doesn't go "Evil people have been stealing money from us and they should be arrested for this", in fact it doesn't even condemn piracy at all. BBC
lol, twilight
Now all you pirates who say "hurf they get enough money" can shut up.
Who the fuck would pirate twilight?
Who the fuck would pirate twilight?
More than half of the human population are female you know.

From that statistic, if you charged everyone only 2 dollars to watch watchmen, they'd still be losing 33,812,904 Dollars If you charge 10 dollars (which is more realistic), they would have lost 169,064,520. Considering the movie made a revenue of 185,248,060, that means they lost about half of the possible income to pirating.
What the fuck, no anime?
hurr, the TV shows list is not surprising in the least. Edit: wait, since when the fuck is heroes drama.
Wow all the top pirated TV shows suck ass
House is in there, you shut your whore mouth.

Watchmen. Shit deserves to be PAID to see.
Who'd pirate LOST, there's much better things to waste your time downloading. [editline]06:48PM[/editline] Wait a second where's Top Gear on that list the news was talking about it the other day and included it.

"x" amount of dollars isn't being extracted from their bank accounts everytime someone downloads their content; they merely don't receive that "x" dollars. They don't lose, but they don't gain. I don't know why people can't understand that.

Release show at the same time in ever country and the downloads will go down, with show like heroes where they use cliffhanger every week you can hardy expect people to wait when the show is right in frount of them.
I understand Watchmen... but... Why the fuck are Yes Man and Benjamin Button on there? Besides Twilight they are the worst movies there.
twilight 11 milion soooooooooo 11 milion babes on internet :c00l: [editline]07:51PM[/editline] vampirebabes
Now all you pirates who say "hurf they get enough money" can shut up.
Last I checked, 13 million out of 6.5 Billion is a very small number. If my math is right, 1 in 500.
That is exactly correct, they didn't receive 170 million dollars worth of stolen footage. People didn't buy what they watched.
prove it
If a person downloads, there is a 50% chance of them buying. But if someone downloads 100% on purpose, company doesn't lose since person wouldn't buy it anyway. Shutup antipiracy fags [editline]05:52PM[/editline] If a person downloads, there is a 50% chance of them buying. You can watch TV for free (well local channels), so I don't see why pirating TV shows is a big deal. I guess they lose Advert revenue or something similar.
Prove what? That the list from the BBC already proves my point? [editline]01:53PM[/editline] 79.12% of statistics are made up on the spot.
Some statistics are binary. 50% means that the person either will or won't buy the media.
Also should be noted that a lot of the tv shows are probably pirated while they're still on air. I personally don't have a tv in my room, but watch Weeds, so I torrent the new episode the day after it airs.
