Parliament plans to vote next Thursday on plans to raise tuition fees for university students, an issue which has split the Liberal Democrats.
Students and teenage school pupils are expected to hold further protests to coincide with the vote, following three demonstrations which have all ended in violence in recent weeks.
The vote, the date of which was confirmed on Thursday, will be a test of Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg's nerve and authority.
The fees are part of austerity measures aimed at cutting government spending by 19 percent over the next four years.
They point out that there will be no up-front payment of tuition fees and that students will only start to pay them back once they are earning 21,000 pounds -- up from a current figure of 15,000.
I know this is a big issue and will affect many facepunchers.
What do you think?
will it affect you?

Although bbc will probably be better for info.
Discuss :v:
I can see what they are trying to do, but I don't think the money they are going to save is going to anything better than a students education.

Exactly, I thought the government encouraged more students to pursue higher education, I was obviously wrong though.
It's stupid, they make the mistakes and then screw the lower generations. This will lower the general quality of the next british generation

The toffs keeping the poor at bay I imagine
Basically, we're fucked.
They raise those fees and all of England's suburbs will erupt into riots and unrest.
They are insane.
IMO paying for education is an outrage overall.
INB4 america has to pay. Well everything in america is cheaper. Just look at the way goods prices are being converted, the $=euro(a bit less but still overpriced for pounds).
Living in europe costs a lot more than living in america, so debt is even worse.
If I can play devil's advocate for a moment; we have a pay-after-you're-done-and-earning-a-wage system in Australia and it works. I don't see how the British government can justify tripling the fees though.
I wish we got free college and university.
Fucking government taxes our asses off and we get shit all in return.
:canada:
In Scotland we still have free education but unless we split from England soon I'm pretty sure we will lose it
have any of you guys actually looked into what they're doing fully instead of just shouting NOOOOO 9K OMG I DONT HAVE THAT MUCH
if you think that's how it works you seriously need to look into it

The moment they start doing this I am going to the border with a saw who's with me?

We shall leave as soon as the vote has been cast :v:

You get over half of your tuition subsidized.
Check the difference between Canadian student's and international student's fees, that is the amount of money the government is spending to send your sorry ass to school.
Here at UofT engineering, it's 11 grand for Canadians, and about 25 grand for international students.

Haha.
The price they're raising tuition to is still cheaper than American universities by a lot; the price they're raising it to is about how much a community college will cost you in the states. And yes, I converted the currencies.
IMO both countries need to stop ignoring the fact that an uneducated generation is never good for a country and provide free education.

That's the idea, it perpetuates the cycle of poverty and ensures there is a large number of uneducated laborers who will work for next to nothing.
Pure evil IMO.
Although we do need some workers :v:
Although we do need some workers :v:
Yes but it's unfair that the poorest people who couldn't otherwise afford university, are now either being forced to take massive student loans, or not go at all and waste their potential.
Poor people aren't stupid, it's naive to potentially prevent the smartest from going getting more education simply because their parents were poor.
You're just shooting yourself in the foot.
I'm not saying that people who are poor should be uneducated and therefore stupid, I'm pointing out that not everyone can be a academic and we still need workers for basic jobs.

Yes, so let the dumb rich people be the workers, this ensures the greatest equality.
Yes, so let the dumb rich people be the workers, this ensures the greatest equality.
I saw people who are naturally unable to be an academic should do these jobs and, whatever class, those who can do these high paid, high responsibility and so on jobs, should.
(too many commas in that :v:)
Although we do need some workers :v:
There's thousands of "workers" sitting on welfare right now.
Why aren't you giving them work?

So you are against raising the student fee?
Fucking chav cunts, destroying a police van and shit, they deserved to get fucking gassed.
Stupid pricks.

You? Do you mean Britain?
I am completely against raising it, it is unfair to punish the lower generations and lowering education is counter-productive in getting out of the recession.

You are punishing the lower classes, not lower generations.
In the average person's life time, they pay the subsidizing part of their tuition back to the government through taxes.
But you need an initial investment to make going to university possible in the first place.

agreed
I can understand the importance of reducing the defecit, but they're going after the wrong people here. They should cut defense spending, or welfare programs for the rich instead.
