Tomorrow, the European Southern Observatory plans an event centered on a blast on Cerro Armazones, a 3,060-meter (10,000-foot) mountain in Chile’s Atacama Desert. The goal is to make way for construction of the European Extremely Large Telescope, which as its name implies will be a monster of an observatory. Read below for details on how to watch live. “The E-ELT will tackle the biggest scientific challenges of our time, and aim for a number of notable firsts, including tracking down Earth-like planets around other stars in the ‘habitable zones’ where life could exist — one of the Holy Grails of modern observational astronomy,” ESO states on its page about the 39-meter (128-foot) optical/near-infrared telescope. so how much time from now? i'm trying to check what the current PST is but getting conflicting info all over with some saying it's 10:30 AM and some displaying 9:30 AM
It's in half an hour, at 7:00PM GMT. Charges are set.
Well, whatever the result or reaction, at least the scientists are gonna have a blast of it :v:
Might be happening in like 5 minutes, might be going ahead of schedule. [editline]19th June 2014[/editline] Yeah they're starting the detonation sequence.
THE FUCK WAS THAT.
wtf the was the tiniest explosion ever
That was SEVERELY disappointing. 20,000 people expecting to see the whole mountain fall down and there's just a little dust in the horizon, lol.
Yup it's over, and the stream buffered right as they set shit off. God damnit.
*pomf*
Oh shit are you kidding me? [editline] 19-6-2014[/editline] Man the vlt blast was way bigger than that.
Yup it's over, and the stream buffered right as they set shit off. God damnit.
It wasn't that great, it was a tiny little explosion you could barely even see.
I want my money back.
0/10 wouldn't blow up again
That was lame.
*pomf*
Wah! What are we gonna do on the mountaintop?
I haven't been so severely disappointed since forever.
My chat was ahead of the stream, so just before the explosion, someone said "What is this, an explosion for ants?" and then it happened.
It wasn't that great, it was a tiny little explosion you could barely even see.
Yeah it finished buffering and all I saw was a wee wisp of dust. Who knows, it might have actually finished buffering and I just assumed the explosion, tiny as it was, was just a wee dusty breeze v:v:v
i even took my laptop to the toilet i was so excited and my shit was bigger than that
the only thing I noticed in chat was the one dude freaking out "THIS IS AGAINST GODS WILL" over and over
And what was up with the timing? They even had a blast counter when the event started. I'm so fucking confused right now I thought they were fucking with us.
That was great. Seeing all those people freak out at how small the explosion was. They were only levelling the top, not trying to blow up the mountain.
the only thing I noticed in chat was the one dude freaking out "THIS IS AGAINST GODS WILL" over and over
oh no, the Twitch chat frequenter broke out of its original habitat
the only thing I noticed in chat was the one dude freaking out "THIS IS AGAINST GODS WILL" over and over
Hahaha I think that was me.
yay, ruin nature so we can build a telelcope to look at how cool other planet's nature is so we can go there and ruin their nature. science is the best
The Galileo spacecraft was commanded to crash into Jupiter at the end of its lifetime specifically because we did not want to contaminate any of Jupiter's moons. The Galileo spacecraft cost about 1.6 billion USD. Every other interplanetary probe is also usually sterilized before deployment to prevent any contamination of the solar system. I am pretty sure that the scientific community wants to do anything but ruin other planets.
yay, ruin nature so we can build a telelcope to look at how cool other planet's nature is so we can go there and ruin their nature. science is the best
Ooooh no not one of the many mountains in the FUCKING ATACAMA DESERT, the most barren place on the planet! The wildlife there consists of scientists, so if anything they're building a wildlife reserve.
that's more like the mountain farted than any sort of real explosion at all.
