Activision Blizzard's secret project, codenamed Titan, is probably not a subscription-based MMORPG anymore, following an assessment of development earlier this year, Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime said during a financial call today.
"We're in the process of selecting a new direction for the project and re-envisioning what we want the game to be," Morhaime said. "While we can't talk about the details yet, it is unlikely to be a subscription-based MMORPG."
It is good to know that even Blizzard realizes that the subscription model is dying out.
Let's just hope they can keep it balanced and save it from the Pay2Win scenario.
As long as all the item shop stuff is purely cosmetic and in no way gives the advantage to those who pays i'm fine with this.
If they embraced the same model that guild wars uses that would be cool!
But im pretty sure its just gonna be f2p.

To be honest it's a really risky choice. The MMO market is really over saturated and it's way easier to try out a free MMO than a pay to play one. Plus as unethical as it is some nutty people will just drop a billion dollars on hats for no reason :v:
Please, don't do a swtor.
but does that mean it's not going to be an MMORPG either or is just not a sub based one

no it's not, there's millions of people who would gladly try it, this is blizzard we're talking about after all
also the subscription model isn't "Dying out" there's just no MMOs recently that have even been worth a subscription

You can say that all you want but almost every game that was subscription based did way better after it switched to free to play. Blizzard is in a pretty lucky position to have a lot of people who would be jumping to play their next game, but very few developers have that.

The reason those games did way better when they switched to free-to-play is because those games were not worth subscribing to begin with. A lot of these games are great but they cant keep players entertained when they reach end-game and its why they die out so fast.
For those who are saying that the subscription model isn't dying out, you have to realize a subscription creates a barrier to entry to gamers unfamiliar with MMOs, and not going a route similar to a one time purchase with micro transactions or even free to a certain level cap (which WoW does to level 20), just doesn't make sense with the current saturation of MMOs out there.
Unless something can completely shake the field, redefining what an MMORPG is to the very core, I doubt anyone would be willing to subscribe to a new MMO for current WoW sub prices, $15 a month.

Not going to doubt most of those games are shit, but to be honest I thought WoW was pretty mediocre and it's one of the most financially successful games of all time. Same can be said about a lot of games that aren't honestly that great doing incredibly well, quality isn't the only factor determining sales. The fact is that a subscribing game (ESPECIALLY ones where you also have to buy the game off the bat as well) put people off trying a game, unless they're sure they want it. Most don't even have free trials anymore

I'm impressed at how they actually haven't gone down that road with WoW yet. Sure there are buyable things but they're purely cosmetic.

Aren't they about to add buyable EXP elixirs in a cash shop

racing to 90 isnt a competition, nice try though

"Nice try though"? Genius :v:
Competition or not the point is it's a gameplay benefit, his post said "purely cosmetic" not "required to be competitive".
Ok so they going for the F2P route, that's all fine and dandy but i know they will do some short of Pay 2 Win kinda deal, or fuck it up REALLY bad like Diablo 3... blizzard don't know much of a good deal, so I expect project titan to be horrendous.

At the moment it's going to only be available to the Asian markets since they pay buy the hour. The community manger has stated though that if we're vocal about they'll see about adding it over to the NA store as well.
MMORPGS should stick to customers buying the game\expansions and paying for ONE OFF account features like extra character slots and stuff like that. Subscription stuff is just garbage and a dated model that only worked due to the monopoly of the MMORPGS on the market at the time.
The level grind in World of Warcraft is entirely unneccessary. There is no reason levels even exist in that game. It's a cockblock designed to slow you down, to keep you paying monthly fees until you reach the max level and are actually able to experience the game as it's meant to be played. Something like 90 percent of all the content in World of Warcraft requires you to be max level. That is a barrier, and people just can't be arsed to deal with that shit anymore. People have gotten tired of those treadmills.
