Citizins all over the world has been sending letters to the UN with the help of an activist website called Avaaz.
Over 900.000 letters has been sent to the UN demanding a no-fly zone over Libya. The website is aiming for one million letters, wich seems very realistic.
To send a letter follow this link: http://avaaz.org/en/libya_no_fly_zone_3/?slideshow
Help the people in Libya by sending a letter, it dosn't cost you anything and takes under a minute!
Impose a no fly zone. Destroy Gadaffi and his minions
Wasn't the US supposed to start setting one up yesterday?

That's what I thought too.
I sent one, I don't think it'll do anything but I might as well.
I think it might be too late for a simple no-fly zone to turn the tide of the war now, we'd need to actually intervene and attack loyalists now. Especially since the no-fly zone still isn't going to be implemented for the next few days, if at all.

Eh? I haven't heard that. The no-fly zone resolution is being debated by the Security Council now and a vote is expected in the coming days.

It makes me slightly sick to think of the rebels being overrun, and the massacre that Gaddafi will orchestrate afterwards.

I don't think sending a letter is gonna make much difference either. But it litterally takes seconds to do it and can only help.
.
Better hurry the fuck up. The way I see it, by helping the Rebels we show good faith for friendship in the event that they do take over. They will look back at this time and see that the Western world helped them reach their goals. If we don't help them they may resent us for it. It's kind of like giving the weird kid at school candy so he won't blow you away the day he brings an AK-47 to school.

The meeting has started.
What exactly will this "no-fly" zone accomplish?
What exactly will this "no-fly" zone accomplish?
Original theory: A big advantage of the loyalists' is that they have the air force on their side. Take that away and the rebels have a better chance of winning.
**LOTS OF DELAYS, DEBATE**
Now: The loyalists have already retaken a shit load of territory, a no-fly zone probably won't save the rebels.

Gaddafi uses aircraft to attack resistance fighters and it's not like they have anti air batteries. As a result they are getting massacred wholesale.
They also strafe civilians who are protesting peacefully in an effort to stop protests. It's working pretty effectively.
A no fly zone is a deterrent; it means that if Libyans attempt to fly their military aircraft in their own airspace, they will be engaged by whoever is enforcing the no fly zone. Like any deterrent, though, it needs to have force backing it up, so when Libya tries to test the water and see how serious the situation is, the aircraft actually need to be shot down.
Shooting down military equipment is an act of war, which has political ramifications, so everyone is pussy footing around the issue with statements like "what's happening in Libya is bad, but is the no fly zone the right option?".

Gadaffi's air force cannot use planes to bombard rebel positions, UN can get air superiority in, if it turns into full military intervention they can fuck up Gadaffi's army with the air force until the ground troops arrive.

Heard alot of news comentators saying that people are under estimating the rebels advantage in urban terain wich Benghazi is. So it could still help alot. Another point is that now humanitarian planes is banned from Libya. If a no-fly zone is imposed these planes could be allowed to fly.

So can we other nations such as the US fly in the no-fly zone? I don't want some UN legislation impairing America's sovereignty over the Earth.
But, if a no-fly zone is established, other countries can send planes in to evacuate people who would probably be killed if captured.

I don't know if you're being sarcastic or not, but anyone who isn't killing rebels or civilians will be allowed to fly if they want to.

Depends on the restrictions. International flights would probably be permitted only from the direct confirmation of the government or they would have to be escorted by the military air force, or if it would be a full blown no-fly zone only the military planes of the countries assinged to control the no-fly zone will be allowed to fly in Libya.
IMO I would rather do a "small" military intervention with Russia, UK and US as the big shots in it. Toss some paratroopers behind enemy lines to draw Gadaffi's forces away from the rebels, then while they're not looking make an areal and naval invasion of the coastal cities and air bases. Then the countries would be able to safely evac their citizens and the UN would be able to fully aid the rebellion. When rebels will be able to take over the situation, pull out and leave some equipment and peacekeeping forces behind "just in case".
I sent one.

Yeah, it's disgusting. The UN claims to appall such massacres, and yet, when there's one right about to happen, they sit back and let politics take the blame. We should've intervened long ago.

I was going to make a thread about this but I couldn't phrase it right. But it was going to be about how people who say "The UN never does shit!" don't realise that the UN is just the sum of its member states, so in this case it's countries like Russia and China's fault, not this mystical "UN" who people seem to think is an organisation that exists above the international community and can control everything

Technically the UN is able to do shit, but those that attend the meetings seem to like talking about serious problems more than stopping serious problems.
But yea, you're right on that, they like fucking things up sometimes.

It's mostly USA, China and Russia thats fucks it up. If China and Russia wasn't in the UN i think it would go alot faster.
The thread was also going to be critical of the Security Council veto because it's a load of shit and is one of the real reasons for shit not getting done
Agree, they mostly use the veto as some kind of dick waving competition.

Why do vetos even exist? I mean sure, if we're talking about some retarded law, but this is an action that is supposed to save thousands of people from dying!
Sent a letter, but why are so many french people making their name in capitals.
Sent a letter, but why are so many french people making their name in capitals.
In France, the caps lock is always on.
I'm in support of doing nothing and not mucking about in other people's business. The rebels have made it clear that they do not want any outside help. It would be different if they were asking for it.
Also, half of these people would turn around and tell everybody to leave Libya alone as soon as anyone intervened.
Maybe those rebels shouldn't have turned down our offers of help when they were winning.
Good thing that the UN is a democratic institution.
HEY LOOK GUYS, LETTERS.
SURE THING CITIZINS
