Why use any other inferior headphones with your Apple® iPhone™ when you can exclusively use BEATS® E
Suddenly why Apple spent a seemingly ludicrous $3.2 billion buying Beats is starting to make sense. The reason: Apple is being more Apple than we ever imagined and it could mean saying goodbye to your favourite pair of headphones. Furthermore, if my theory is correct, then the new ones you buy will probably have Beats on the logo.
Get Ready For Lightning Headphones
Like most Apple developments, the news emerged from a leak. 9to5Mac has learnt that Apple submitted a specification to its MFi (Made For) licensing program for headphones which connect using the company’s proprietary Lightning port instead of the standard 3.5mm jack. Furthermore all it will take for the Lightning port to start accepting these new headphones is a firmware update.
[...]
Right now you can plug any pair of headphones or earphones into an iPhone, iPod, iPad, Mac or MacBook, but with the switch Apple would control an essential peripheral and its MFi licensing program would see it start to take a sizeable fee for every pair of headphones sold for use with an Apple device. Meanwhile Apple would suck up the majority of the profits with the Beats brand because owning it means there will be no licensing fee.
As for users who want to stick with their headphones, they would need to pay for an adaptor which – like the $29 Lightning to 30-pin adaptor (below) – would inevitably be expensive and just bulky enough to make you want to buy dedicated Lightning headphones long term.
Typical.
In short: they're considering abandoning 3.5mm jacks on iOS devices to exclusively use the Lightning connector for headphones, with an adapter that you have to buy (from them) if you wanna keep using your old ones. Remember the last time someone tried this? Gee, I wonder why that stupid idea was gone in the next revision.
Retina™ Audio
That's cool, nice to see they're shooting themselves in the foot, pretty sure you can't do the whole proprietary port bullshit here in the EU any more, or that might just be with phone chargers and plugs and shit.
If they don't drop the 3.5mm jack, this would be fine. If they drop it, then you can be nearly guaranteed that I won't wind up buying an apple device in the future unless they really had something to offer.
Just cut off the lead and solder/crimp on a female 3.5 jack, the lead connection will most probably be the same as any other headphones, just with a shitey proprietary jack. Problem solved.
This would make sense if it would be used to power the headphones, for example my headphones need an amp. I highly doubt that they gonna use it for that though.
Actually thinking about it, if this was the case then why would they sell headphones which need power even if they can just use something that doesn't need that much power?
So in other words, apple knows jack shit about audio?

They're not abandoning anything, that's just the writer throwing out ridiculous guesses.
All they did was show off a way for headphones to use the lightning port to interact with apps and draw power and stuff.
plus consider the fact that only after iphone happened did most phone makes start putting proper headphone jacks in their phones
prior to that you had to deal with this shit:

My dumbphone in 2007 or 2008 or whenever had a tiny jack for a headset.
Then again, it required a proprietary cable instead of USB, so it wasn't entirely sane.
They won't do this.
What if you want to charge it while listening?

those jacks aren't proprietary, just smaller 2.5mm jacks
and I doubt apple will be getting rid of the 3.5 jack, the lightning port might be outputting a digital signal, or maybe just unamped and letting the headphones deal w/ that

never saw one of these in my life and i have cell phones dating back to the mid to late 90's.
What if you want to charge it while listening?
Then you buy the £25 official beats x apple dual lightning adapter that let's you listen and charge at the same time
Even if they did, China will be cranking out knockoffs and adapters in a few weeks.

it was common for sony ericsson phones
that adapter came with the package when you bought the phone tho
>still using corded earbuds
I use bluetooth for everything connected to my iphone. Hopefully they keep that.

That was my point. It was a 2.5 jack, which is pretty easy to get stuff for anyways.
i'm growing less and less fond of music on the move anyway.
i'd rather cherish the stuff with good speakers\headsets than listen to train noise and poor sound quality.
swimming while listening to music is great though.
And then they change up the connection Slightly when each new phone is released, forcing you to get a new charger , new case, and new headphones for every new phone just so the battery life can be 5 minutes longer, camera slightly better, and phone slightly thinner.
Then a bunch of stuck-up hipsters will still be in line by the thousands to get assraped each time a new iphone comes out.
This might be a rumor, but with how Apple deals with their charge ports, I wouldn't be suprised that would happen.
Rating the article dumb, not you op.
TBH, why use your proprietary port, 3.5mm is so much better for your customers not everyone wants
Beats Earphones, theres people who prefer stuff like Sennheiser which is way cheaper and sounds way better.
Apple just being Apple again.

There's no evidence whatsoever that they're abandoning the 3.5mm jack. This is all that was announced: http://appleinsider.com/articles/14/06/05/apple-announces-lightning-enabled-headphone-standard-in-wwdc-session
During a WWDC session earlier this week, Apple revealed a new Lightning module for headphones that promises to provide deeper system controls, direct analog audio out and power to compatible accessories.
According to Apple's manager of platform accessories Robert Walsh, the new Lightning headphone module connects directly into an iOS device's Lightning port, breaking out analog audio. In addition, the module offers more bandwidth and a digital interface for richer control of system services like iTunes Radio.
"If your headphones support, for example, noise cancellation, you can offer an app on your device that communicates with your headphones that controls how it operates," Walsh said.
Alongside the increased bandwidth on tap from Lightning, the connection standard can deliver power to advanced headphone accessories. By offloading energy supply duties to an iPhone or iPad, a headphone maker can do away with some of the bulk that comes from designing space for a battery pack.
so it's available to all accessory makers and it's only there if they wish to take advantage of its features

Off topic but why ban? Never been bannable in the past.
Since iPhone already uses lightning port for charging and data transfer they will probably release their own branded earbuds that will use that port, without removing 3.5mm jack
It's news like this that makes me glad to be an Android user.
